King George Hospital Breaks New Ground: Free Immunotherapy Now Available for Lung Cancer Patients

In a milestone for public healthcare in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam’s King George Hospital has launched a clinical trial providing high-cost immunotherapy at no expense to eligible individuals.

For many families battling advanced-stage cancer, the crushing financial burden often proves as daunting as the diagnosis itself. Recognizing this, the Department of Medical Oncology at King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam has stepped in to bridge the gap, becoming the first government facility in Andhra Pradesh to offer state-of-the-art immunotherapy for lung cancer patients completely free of cost. This initiative marks a significant shift in how public hospitals handle complex, high-value medical interventions.

A Breakthrough in Clinical Access

Immunotherapy has revolutionized modern oncology by empowering the patient's own immune system to identify and dismantle cancer cells. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which can often be taxing on the body, these treatments work by blocking proteins—such as PDL1—that allow tumors to evade immune detection. While highly effective, the cost of this therapy in the private sector is prohibitive for most, with a single cycle costing upwards of ₹4 lakh. Over a standard course of 17 cycles, the total expenditure can reach a staggering ₹68 lakh, placing it well beyond the reach of the average citizen.

By launching this specialized clinical trial, KGH is ensuring that financial status no longer dictates a patient's access to life-saving care. Dr. K. Shilpa, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology and the Principal Investigator for the trial, noted that the hospital aims to provide these 17 cycles of treatment to eligible patients free of charge. The administration has set specific criteria for the study, focusing on patients aged 18 to 65 who have been diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer.

Expanding the Scope of Public Healthcare

The move is a welcome development in a landscape where government schemes like Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and various state-run funds often serve as the primary lifeline for those seeking affordable care. While India has a growing network of support, including Jan Aushadi pharmacies and specialized cancer centers, the availability of advanced, innovative therapies within a government hospital setting remains rare. KGH Superintendent I. Vani emphasized that this clinical trial is a matter of institutional pride, representing a proactive step toward making cutting-edge oncology accessible to all.

As KGH continues to integrate these advanced trials into its service offerings, the hospital is setting a new benchmark for public healthcare in the region. Beyond this lung cancer initiative, the facility recently garnered attention for successfully performing a complex surgery to remove a 4.5-kilogram tumor, further cementing its reputation for handling rare and difficult medical cases. For patients currently grappling with the challenges of lung cancer, this new program provides not just a medical intervention, but a renewed sense of hope and security in their path to recovery.
