Former minister Baidyanath Ram will represent the JMM in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections as coalition partners coordinate to secure both vacant seats.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has officially entered the fray for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls, announcing former minister Baidyanath Ram as its candidate for one of the two available seats. The decision, confirmed by JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya on Saturday, sets the stage for a high-stakes legislative exercise scheduled for June 18. Mr. Ram is expected to file his nomination papers on June 8, accompanied by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

The vacancy in the Upper House has emerged following the passing of JMM co-founder Shibu Soren and the impending completion of BJP member Deepak Prakash’s six-year term on June 21. While the JMM has staked its claim on the first seat, the nomination for the second remains under deliberation. Party leadership is currently engaged in talks with the Congress to finalize a joint approach, following a meeting where JMM legislators urged the party to contest both seats.

Coalition Math and Strategic Positioning

The arithmetic within the Jharkhand Assembly suggests a comfortable path for the ruling coalition, provided internal consensus holds. The INDIA bloc currently commands 56 members, well above the 28 first-preference votes required to secure a single Rajya Sabha seat. This strength is drawn from a collective of 34 JMM MLAs, 16 from the Congress, four from the RJD, and two from the CPI(ML) Liberation.

Conversely, the NDA maintains a smaller footprint in the assembly with 24 members, including 21 from the BJP, and one each from the LJP (Ram Vilas), AJSU Party, and the JD(U). One additional seat is held by the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha. Given the voting requirements, the ability of the INDIA bloc to win both seats rests on the durability of the current alliance between the JMM and the Congress.

The Nomination Timeline

The formal process for the election began on June 1, with the deadline for filing nominations set for June 8. The Congress has already signaled its involvement in the contest, having announced senior functionary Pranav Jha as its candidate on June 5. As political parties navigate the final days of the nomination window, the focus remains on whether the coalition will present a unified front or if competing interests for the second seat might complicate the seat-sharing arrangement.

The outcome of these polls will not only fill critical vacancies in the Rajya Sabha but also serve as a barometer for the unity of the INDIA bloc within the state. With the official polling date of June 18 approaching, the JMM’s decision to put forward an experienced hand like Baidyanath Ram underscores the party's intent to maintain a firm grip on its influence in the national parliament.
