A promising academic’s life was cut short in East Delhi, sparking a police investigation into a case that investigators say bears the hallmarks of a targeted crime.

The academic community is in shock following the discovery of 43-year-old Devosmita Paul, an Assistant Professor at Delhi University’s Shivaji College, who was found dead in her Vasundhara Enclave apartment on Thursday. What should have been a pivotal day in her professional life—marked by a scheduled promotion interview—instead became the focus of a grim police investigation. Authorities were alerted to the tragedy after the victim’s sister, Devarati Paul, grew increasingly alarmed by her failure to answer repeated phone calls.

A Routine Disrupted

In the hours leading up to the tragedy, there were no outward signs that a life was about to be upended. Investigators noted that the professor, who had lived alone at the Satyam Apartment complex for the past four to five years, had been in communication with her family, even taking the time to ensure her mother received necessary medicines. This domestic normalcy makes her sudden absence from her workplace duties particularly jarring; colleagues confirmed that she never arrived for the crucial career-advancement interview she had lined up that same day.

A Locked-Door Mystery

The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body have led police to treat the case as a potential homicide. When Devarati Paul reached the apartment, she found the front door locked from the outside. With the assistance of local residents and members of the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), the lock was forced open, revealing the professor’s body on the floor. A formal PCR call was logged at the New Ashok Nagar Police Station at approximately 2:35 pm, triggering an immediate forensic response.

Investigating the Inner Circle

While the investigation remains in its early stages, the absence of forced entry at the scene has become a primary point of interest for the East Delhi police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Rajiv Kumar indicated that the lack of signs of a break-in suggests the perpetrator may have been someone known to the victim. As forensics teams comb the flat for evidence, the lack of a clear motive has left investigators looking closely at both her professional and personal associations to determine who might have had access to her home.

The sudden death of a faculty member serves as a sobering reminder of the security concerns facing professionals living independently in the capital. As the probe continues, the academic fraternity remains in a state of mourning, waiting for answers in a case where a day of anticipated career progression turned into a profound personal tragedy.
