After two decades of relentless litigation, Varsha Gohil has finally secured a landmark £6.6 million payout, ending one of the most protracted divorce cases in British legal history.

A London-based Indian-origin woman has emerged victorious in a grueling 23-year-long divorce battle in the UK, winning a settlement of £6.6 million, approximately Rs 85 crore. The case, which began in May 2002, stands as a testament to persistence after Varsha Gohil challenged an initial, modest agreement upon realizing her husband, solicitor Bhadresh Gohil, had intentionally concealed significant financial assets.

From Modest Payout to Legal Marathon

Initially, the divorce proceedings appeared routine. Varsha Gohil accepted a settlement of roughly £270,000, along with the family car, believing she had reached a fair resolution. However, her suspicions that the true extent of the marital wealth had been hidden led her to pursue legal recourse. This decision triggered a complex journey through the British judicial system, eventually reaching the Supreme Court. In a landmark 2015 ruling, the court affirmed that a spouse cannot benefit from deceiving the court regarding their financial standing, allowing Varsha to reopen the case.

Hidden Wealth and Criminal Ties

The legal saga became increasingly complicated when Bhadresh Gohil was linked to an international money-laundering investigation. In 2011, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a corruption scandal involving associates of a former Nigerian governor. While the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) moved to seize nearly £28 million in assets, arguing they were the proceeds of crime, Varsha Gohil maintained that a portion of the family wealth was legitimate and untainted by criminal activity.

A Scathing Judicial Verdict

The long-standing dispute finally reached a conclusion following a High Court judgment that acknowledged a portion of the assets as legitimate marital property. In his ruling dated May 28, 2025, Justice Williams delivered a sharp critique of the husband’s actions. Describing the conduct as being at the "highest end of the scale" regarding dishonesty, the judge emphasized the severe consequences of such non-disclosure.

The Court of Appeal’s decision to block further appeals has finally brought this chapter to a close. Now 61, Varsha Gohil has seen her resolve validated, successfully navigating both the complexities of family law and the shadows of a major criminal investigation. The settlement serves as a significant resolution for an individual who refused to walk away despite immense personal and health-related challenges faced over more than two decades.
