India slams Pakistan over ‘abuse’ of UN forum to peddle narratives on Jammu and Kashmir
‘Abuse of its presence’: India slams Pakistan over raising Jammu and Kashmir issue at UN

India’s permanent representative to the UN delivered a sharp rebuke to Islamabad for repeatedly attempting to internationalize the internal status of the Union Territory.
New Delhi’s diplomatic machinery shifted into high gear at the United Nations on Friday, as India hit back at Pakistan for once again hijacking international platforms to raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. The sharp exchange occurred during a UN General Assembly session centered on the ‘Annual Report of the Security Council,’ where India’s Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, accused Islamabad of weaponizing a global forum to propagate a “biased and false narrative.”
A call for responsibility
The confrontation was sparked by remarks from Pakistan’s permanent representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who used his time on the floor to bring up the internal affairs of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Harish, responding with diplomatic force, characterized this behavior as an “abuse” of Pakistan’s presence within the Security Council. He reminded the assembly that membership in such an august body carries a weight of responsibility, asserting that it should not be treated as a stage for airing regional grievances or political posturing.
"Pakistan has decided not to spare this forum either from their characteristic misuse of august UN platforms for their divisive political interests," Harish stated. He further pointed out that Pakistan’s pattern of circulating misinformed and misleading communications serves only to undermine the productivity of the Council.
Fundamental reality
Addressing the assembly, Harish did not mince words regarding the legal status of the territory. He reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is, and will remain, an integral part of India. According to the Indian envoy, Pakistan’s persistent reliance on “empty rhetoric and hollow claims” does nothing to alter the ground reality of the region.
The exchange highlights a recurring point of friction in India-Pakistan diplomatic relations at the multilateral level. While India maintains that the issue is strictly an internal matter, Pakistan’s repeated attempts to raise it at the UN have consistently been met with firm rebuttals from New Delhi. By dismissing the claims as a distraction, India aims to signal to the international community that it will not permit its internal governance to be subject to external debate.
Diplomatic fatigue
The decision to address the matter directly in the chamber appeared to be a calculated move to curtail the diversion of the UN’s time. Harish concluded his remarks by noting that, in the interest of the wider membership of the United Nations, he would not delve further into the provocations.
This latest incident underscores the strained nature of the two nations' engagement on global stages. While global powers have recently focused on broader issues of regional autonomy and international security—with figures like Vladimir Putin acknowledging the importance of India’s strategic independence—Pakistan’s continued focus on the Kashmir issue remains a persistent obstacle to normalized dialogue, forcing India to maintain a policy of firm, public correction whenever the topic is broached on the world stage.
