Horse-Trading Allegations Rock Tamil Nadu: TVK and DMK Exchange Barbs Over Senthil Balaji Lookout Notice
TVK, DMK Exchange Horse-Trading Barbs; Stalin, Top DMK Leaders Mum On Lookout Notice To Senthil Balaji

As the political temperature in Tamil Nadu rises, allegations of poaching and a high-stakes police investigation into a Rs 180 crore conspiracy have left the state's corridors of power in a deadlock.
The political battlefield in Tamil Nadu has turned volatile, with the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK engaged in a bitter standoff over accusations of systematic horse-trading. What began as whispers of dissatisfaction among backbenchers has exploded into a full-blown crisis, with TVK legislators publicly claiming they were approached with lucrative offers to abandon the ruling government.
From Claims to Police Summons
The tension escalated after Srivaikundam TVK MLA stepped forward to allege that an associate of former DMK minister Senthil Balaji had contacted him, dangling incentives to switch sides. This follows a formal complaint lodged by Uthangarai MLA N. Ilaiyaraja on June 29, which set the wheels of a police investigation in motion. Authorities are now probing an alleged conspiracy involving nearly Rs 180 crore, reportedly set aside to lure ruling legislators away from the government.
As the probe widens, investigators have fanned out across Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, and Bengaluru in search of suspects. Most significantly, police have issued a lookout notice for Senthil Balaji. Summons were recently served at his ancestral residence in Rameswarapatti, directing both the former minister and his brother to appear for questioning on July 6.
Silence and Strategy
While the TVK has been vocal in accusing the DMK of attempting to destabilize the state government, the response from the opposition camp has been marked by a conspicuous silence. M.K. Stalin and other top DMK leaders have remained mum on the lookout notice to Senthil Balaji, choosing not to address the specific allegations of a poaching plot. Conversely, the DMK has countered by accusing the Chief Minister of weaponizing state machinery to intimidate political opponents under the guise of investigating horse-trading.
Why it matters
This confrontation represents a dangerous shift in the state's political culture, where the stability of the government is now being contested through financial allegations rather than policy debates. If the police investigation fails to yield concrete evidence to support the massive Rs 180 crore claim, it risks being perceived as a tool for political vendetta. Conversely, if the allegations are proven, it signals an era of 'checkbook politics' that threatens to erode the mandate provided by the electorate. For now, the stalemate serves as a distraction from governance, with both sides waiting for the next legal maneuver in this high-stakes standoff.
