High-Stakes Diplomacy: PM Modi’s Europe Trip Focuses on Tech, Trade and Global Clout

From a high-profile innovation push in France to a historic first-time visit to Slovakia, the PM’s European tour sets the stage for critical G7 discussions.

The humid warmth of a French summer serves as the backdrop for what is arguably one of the most consequential diplomatic itineraries for Prime Minister Narendra Modi this year. Landing in Nice on Saturday, the PM’s schedule is packed with a blend of grand statecraft and granular economic diplomacy. While the G7 summit in Evian remains the anchor for this trip, the run-up to the event is defined by a focused push to cement India’s role as a tech powerhouse and a pivotal player in the Global South.

The Macron Connection and the Tech Pivot

The immediate priority for the Prime Minister is his bilateral engagement with President Emmanuel Macron. Following the elevation of India-France relations to a "Special Global Strategic Partnership" earlier this year, the two leaders are moving beyond traditional defence and nuclear energy dialogues. On Sunday, they will jointly inaugurate Bharat Innovates 2026, a massive, three-day conclave. By bringing together venture capitalists and startup founders from both nations, the event signals a clear shift: India wants to move its European partnerships into the high-growth arena of emerging technologies.

A Diplomatic First in Slovakia

While France provides the familiar turf of a long-standing partner, the subsequent visit to Slovakia on June 14-15 represents a fresh diplomatic frontier. It is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since the nation gained independence in 1993. Building on the momentum of President Droupadi Murmu’s recent trip and recent high-level AI discussions involving President Peter Pellegrini, the visit to Bratislava is aimed at tangible economic outcomes. Prime Minister Robert Fico and the Indian delegation are expected to sharpen their focus on automobile manufacturing, railway infrastructure, and bilateral investment—sectors where Slovakia’s industrial expertise could complement India’s domestic manufacturing ambitions.

The G7 Stage and the Trump Equation

As the itinerary shifts back to France for the G7 summit on June 16, the atmosphere will undoubtedly turn more geopolitical. The most anticipated moment of the summit is the expected meeting between the Prime Minister and US President Donald Trump on June 17. Trade—long a point of friction between Washington and New Delhi—is widely expected to top the agenda. With the White House confirming the session, officials are watching closely to see if the two leaders can find common ground on tariff structures and market access, providing a much-needed boost to the broader bilateral economic framework.

Why it matters

The scale and pace of this visit reveal a clear strategic pattern: New Delhi is no longer just a participant in global forums; it is actively curating its own agenda. By balancing the "Special Global Strategic Partnership" with France against the transactional demands of the US, and simultaneously opening new doors in Central Europe, the government is attempting to insulate India from the volatility of global supply chains. The focus on technology and innovation is not merely about business; it is a long-term play to ensure that India remains central to the future of the global economy, rather than just a peripheral market.
