From Scorching Heat to Sudden Chill: Delhi Sees Record Temperature Drop as Monsoon Advances

A rare, expansive weather system has brought unseasonal rain and a dramatic plunge in temperatures to Delhi, while Indore experiences an unusually cool June.

The national capital witnessed a remarkable shift in climate this week as a rare, 1,000-kilometre-long trough line under an active western disturbance brought widespread rain and gusty winds. While parts of the country had been grappling with a relentless heatwave, the sudden atmospheric change caused temperatures in Delhi to plummet significantly. In some areas, residents saw the mercury slide by as much as 19 degrees Celsius within a matter of hours, trading blistering heat for a brief, winter-like chill that required many to reach for warm clothing once more.

A Dramatic Shift in the Capital

The cooling trend followed a period of intense heat, with some locations in the region recording highs exceeding 40 degrees Celsius just days prior. Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted the severity of the drop; for instance, Ayanagar saw temperatures fall from 41 degrees Celsius to 22.7 degrees Celsius following the storm. Across the city, strong surface winds—reaching speeds between 80 and 100 kmph—accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall, disrupted morning traffic and prompted authorities to advise citizens to remain indoors.

Weather Patterns Beyond Delhi

While the focus has been heavily on the capital, unusual weather patterns are being observed elsewhere. In Madhya Pradesh, residents have noted that the weather in Indore has remained unexpectedly mild for June, a month typically characterized by building heat before the full onset of the monsoon. As the country monitors these shifts, the IMD has also issued yellow and orange alerts for various districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, citing the risk of heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds.

The Monsoon Progresses

The meteorological landscape is currently defined by the arrival of the southwest monsoon, which officially entered India via Kerala on Thursday. The weather department suggests that conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the monsoon to advance further. Over the coming days, the seasonal rains are expected to sweep through the central Arabian Sea, parts of Maharashtra, and the entirety of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as several regions in Andhra Pradesh and the northeastern states.

Why the Weather Turned

Climate experts have pointed to the unique structure of the current western disturbance as the primary driver for the unseasonal conditions in North India. Unlike standard systems, this rare trough line has maintained a straight, expansive path, allowing it to trigger intense thunderstorms and sustained cloud cover. This "insane cover" has effectively acted as a shield against the summer sun, keeping daytime temperatures in parts of Delhi well below their seasonal averages, providing a temporary but stark contrast to the stifling heat that preceded the storm.
