From Fiji to Vadodara: How a Long-Distance Contract Killing Unraveled
A ‘supari’ from ex-employer in Fiji: Two men who shot at Vadodara trader arrested

Police trace a sophisticated plot involving an electronics engineer and a transnational financial dispute that turned into a targeted hit.
The quiet streets of Vadodara were shattered on the night of June 26 when a garment trader, Ashish Kumar, was shot at while driving his car near Waghodia Chokdi. What initially appeared to be a random act of violence was, in reality, the culmination of a meticulous two-month plot orchestrated from thousands of miles away. Investigators have now arrested two men, uncovering a chilling trail that leads from the bustling streets of Gujarat back to a former employer based in Fiji.
The anatomy of a hit
Vadodara Range Inspector General Sandeep Singh confirmed that the conspiracy was allegedly hatched by Jay Dalal, a former employer of the victim. The two had been embroiled in a long-standing financial dispute dating back to Kumar’s time working in Fiji. To settle the score, Dalal allegedly recruited Vikram Pratap Singh, an electronics engineer from Durg, to carry out the attack.
The planning was clinical. Vikram arrived in New Delhi from Singapore on April 20, immediately linking up with a co-accused, Gurjeet Singh. Over the following two months, the duo conducted surveillance on Kumar’s daily movements and scouted escape routes. In a bizarre display of nonchalance, they even integrated themselves into the local scene, caught on camera watching movies at Pooja Mall and Bansal Mall during their reconnaissance trips.
The chase and the capture
The police investigation was a masterclass in digital and physical reconstruction. By mapping mobile phone data, scanning CCTV footage, and tracking train tickets, authorities eventually traced the suspects back to Durg. Police teams from Vadodara spent two days coordinating with local authorities in Chhattisgarh before moving in for the arrests.
The urgency of the operation was clear: police recovered an air ticket for July 7, suggesting that Vikram had planned to flee the country for Fiji just days after the shooting. While two men are now in custody, the focus has shifted toward the mastermind. Sandeep Singh said that officials are currently examining the legal pathways for the extradition of Jay Dalal to ensure he faces trial in India for his alleged role in the contract killing.
The bigger picture
This case highlights a disturbing trend where modern technology and global mobility are weaponized to settle personal grievances across borders. The distance between Fiji and Vadodara did not act as a deterrent; instead, it created a false sense of security for the perpetrators who assumed that cross-country travel would shield them from local law enforcement.
It also serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of crime in our cities. When a professional—in this case, an electronics engineer—is recruited for a hit, the level of planning shifts from impulsive to systematic. As the police continue to tighten their grip on the case, the incident marks a significant test for inter-state and international law enforcement cooperation in dismantling transnational criminal networks.
