From Ayodhya to Bahraich: Allegations of Financial Irregularity Rock Dargah Management
राम मंदिर के बाद अब बहराइच की दरगाह में करोड़ों रुपये के गबन का आरोप, कमेटी पदाधिकारियों ने दी सफाई
Following reports of missing offerings at the Ram Mandir, the management of the Syed Salar Masood Ghazi Dargah faces scrutiny over alleged misappropriation of funds.
The serene atmosphere of the Syed Salar Masood Ghazi Dargah in Bahraich is currently overshadowed by a brewing controversy. Fresh off the heels of public discourse surrounding the management of offerings at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the Dargah is now the subject of serious allegations involving the alleged embezzlement of crores of rupees in cash and precious offerings.
The charges were levelled by Abdul Basit, the state president of the BJP’s Minority Morcha, who has questioned the transparency of the current management committee. As thousands of devotees—known as zaireen—continue to visit the site, offering significant amounts of cash and gold and silver ornaments, the security and accountability of these donations have become a matter of intense public and political debate.
Management Defends Process
In response to these allegations, Dargah Committee President Bakaullah Khan has firmly rejected the claims, labelling them an attempt to tarnish the institution's reputation. Khan asserts that the counting of offerings is a rigorous process conducted under the watchful eyes of CCTV cameras installed throughout the premises.
According to the management, every rupee collected is meticulously recorded, counted under surveillance, and subsequently deposited into official bank accounts. Furthermore, the committee maintains that all relevant financial details are regularly communicated to the Waqf Board, providing a layer of oversight that they argue clears them of any wrongdoing.
Official Scrutiny and Media Reports
The gravity of the allegations has prompted administrative action. Dinesh Pratap Singh, the minister in charge of the district, has officially requested a detailed report from the District Magistrate to ascertain the veracity of the claims. The situation has been tracked closely by local media; an original article by Dainik Jagran served as a primary source for these highlights, bringing the issue into the broader public eye. While the Dainik Jagran report documented the specific accusations and the counter-statements from the committee, the investigation remains in its initial stages as officials await the outcome of the district administration’s inquiry.
Why it Matters
The controversy in Bahraich highlights a growing national trend where the financial management of large religious institutions—regardless of their faith—is facing unprecedented levels of public scrutiny. In an era where digital footprints and heightened political awareness intersect, the "trust deficit" between devotees and temple or shrine management committees is widening. This incident serves as a bellwether for how administrative bodies must now operate; legacy systems of managing donations are no longer sufficient. Whether these allegations hold water or are merely political posturing, the demand for forensic transparency is clearly becoming the new baseline for managing India's high-traffic religious sites.
