The Barcelona forward has officially surpassed Raúl Albiol’s record, setting a new benchmark for players from the Comunitat Valenciana on the international stage.

The quiet town of Foios has plenty to celebrate. Ferran Torres, the 24-year-old Barcelona forward, has officially etched his name into the history books of Spanish football. Following a recent appearance against Saudi Arabia, the youngster reached 59 caps for the national side, finally breaking the deadlock he shared with the legendary Raúl Albiol. For a player who debuted only in September 2020, the trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric.

The rise of a new record-holder

Torres’s journey to the top of the list was a steady climb. He first equalled Albiol’s long-standing record of 58 international appearances during Spain’s opening match of the current tournament against Cabo Verde. In that game, the forward was a constant threat, coming agonizingly close to scoring when his strike rattled the woodwork. While that match ended in a stalemate, it served as the symbolic passing of the torch from one Valencia-born talent to another.

The record he eclipsed was held by Raúl Albiol, a defensive stalwart who defined an era of Spanish dominance. Between 2007 and 2021, Albiol—who also honed his craft at Valencia CF—amassed 58 caps, boasting an incredible record of 50 wins and only five losses. Albiol’s legacy includes the 2010 World Cup and back-to-back European Championships, setting a high bar for any successor. David Albelda remains the third-most capped player from the region, with 51 appearances to his name.

Why it matters: A shifting guard

This milestone is more than just a tally of matches; it signals a generational shift in the national team’s DNA. Torres has managed to score 24 goals in his 59 appearances, placing him firmly among the top ten all-time scorers for 'La Roja'. Unlike the defensive bedrock provided by his predecessor Albiol, Torres represents the modern, aggressive attacking identity that Spain has sought to cultivate in recent years.

Beyond the numbers, Torres is chasing a personal slice of history. Having featured in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where he found the back of the net twice, he is currently aiming to become the first-ever player from the Comunitat Valenciana to score in two different World Cup editions. He joins elite company as only the third player from the region to participate in two separate World Cup finals, following in the footsteps of Antonio Maceda and David Albelda. Whether he cements this legacy in the current tournament remains the question on every fan's lips.
