Delhi Hotel Fire Tragedy: Eight Members of One Family Among Those Killed

A hopeful visit to support an ailing father turned into a catastrophe as a family was trapped and killed in a devastating blaze at a Malviya Nagar guest house.

The Flourish Stay B&B, intended to be a convenient base for a family supporting a loved one through a medical crisis, became the site of a harrowing tragedy this Wednesday. Eight members of the Aggarwal family were among those who lost their lives when a massive fire engulfed the building. The group had traveled to the capital to be near Radhe Shyam Aggarwal, who is currently undergoing treatment for a lung ailment at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket.

A Final, Fateful Gathering

The family had meticulously planned their stay to remain close to the hospital. Among the victims were 48-year-old chartered accountant Vivek Aggarwal, his wife Tarjani, his mother Premlata, and his two daughters, Jeeviska and Waria. They were joined by Vivek’s aunt and uncle, Kamla and Jhimri Lal Aggarwal, along with his cousin, Ashok Goyal, who had traveled from Kishangarh to visit his father. Relatives noted that the youngest victim, Jeeviska, had arrived from Bengaluru only a day earlier to see her grandfather.

In the final, agonizing moments before the flames took hold, Vivek managed to place a desperate call to his relative, Puneet Gupta. "Brother, maybe we won't survive," Vivek said during the call. Another cousin, Mahender Garg, also reported receiving a frantic plea for help from the basement of the hotel just ten minutes before the situation turned fatal. Despite these desperate communications, rescue efforts were hampered by the building's design, which survivors and relatives described as a trap with narrow, congested exits and iron-grilled windows.

The Search for Answers

As news of the fire spread, the search for the missing family members became a grim ordeal. By afternoon, approximately 50 relatives had gathered outside the hospital, moving from one enquiry desk to another. "We just want to know where they are, dead or alive," said Yogesh Aggarwal, who had spent hours scouring mortuaries and trauma centers. The task of identification proved particularly difficult, as many of the bodies were severely burned, forcing families to face an unimaginable reality.

The Delhi administration has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, grieving relatives are demanding accountability for the safety lapses that led to such a high death toll. They alleged that the building lacked proper fire escapes and that the narrow lanes of the area made it nearly impossible for emergency services to reach the site effectively.

While the family prepares for the final rites of the eight victims in Gurugram, they have maintained a heartbreaking silence regarding the tragedy toward Radhe Shyam Aggarwal. The patriarch remains in the intensive care unit, unaware that the loved ones who came to support him in his time of need have been lost forever.
