By 1:27 p.m. ET, Downdetector had logged over 2,000 reports from frustrated subscribers, marking a sharp spike in connectivity issues. The outage was not confined to a single interface; it hit the Claude web platform, its API, and specialized tools like Claude Code and Claude Cowork.
For a service that has become central to many professional workflows, the timing was particularly disruptive. Anthropic confirmed the issue on its status page shortly before 1:30 p.m. ET, citing "elevated errors" across its ecosystem. While engineers were quick to implement a fix, the recovery process was staggered. Initial reports showed an error rate of about 10% across all Sonnet and Opus models during the first half hour of the collapse.

While the core service was restored for most, the resolution was not immediate for all users. Certain models, specifically Opus 4.8 and Haiku 4.5, proved more stubborn, continuing to show errors long after the broader outage was addressed. Opus 4.8, in particular, remained unstable for over an hour and 20 minutes after the rest of the fleet had stabilized.

Some users jokingly suggested that the downtime might signal the return of the "Fable 5" model, which Anthropic had pulled from circulation just last Friday. That model’s removal was a direct response to US government export controls and concerns over potential security vulnerabilities, rather than a technical glitch. Anthropic has maintained that the government’s security fears regarding Fable 5 were overstated, but the model remains inaccessible.
