Checking Your PF Balance: Is Your 8.25% Interest Credited Yet?

A quick guide to tracking your retirement savings and verifying if the latest interest payout has hit your account.

For millions of salaried professionals in the private sector, the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is the bedrock of long-term financial security. Every month, 12% of your basic salary is diverted into this pool, matched by an equal contribution from your employer. While the mechanics of this deduction are routine, the annual interest credit—fixed at 8.25% for the 2025-26 fiscal year—is where the real value of the investment lies. Yet, many employees remain in the dark about whether these funds have actually been deposited into their accounts.

Why it matters

The importance of regular monitoring goes beyond mere curiosity. Checking your balance isn't just about calculating your current వడ్డీ (interest); it is a vital audit tool. It confirms that your employer is consistently fulfilling their statutory obligation to deposit your share and their matching contribution. Discrepancies here can lead to significant headaches during job transitions or retirement, making proactive oversight a necessity rather than a choice.

Four ways to check your status

The EPFO has streamlined access, moving away from cumbersome paperwork toward digital self-service. Whether you are technically savvy or prefer a basic phone, there are four primary ways to verify your account status.

  • Missed Call Service: Perhaps the simplest method. From your registered mobile number, give a missed call to 9966044425. After two or three rings, the call drops, and you will receive an automated SMS detailing your current balance.
  • SMS Service: For those who prefer a text-based record, send an SMS in the format: EPFOHO UAN ENG (replace 'ENG' with 'TEL' or other language codes if preferred) to 7738299899. Ensure your UAN is correct, as this is the primary key to your data.
  • UMANG App: This remains the most robust mobile solution. After logging in with your registered mobile number and searching for 'EPFO', navigate to 'Employee Centric Services'. Use the 'Track Claim' option, enter your UAN, and authenticate via OTP to view your passbook.
  • Official Portal: The EPF portal remains the most comprehensive primary tool. By logging into the member portal, you can access your passbook directly, which provides a detailed breakdown of the interest credited and the monthly contribution history.

The bigger picture

The delay in interest reflection is a common point of anxiety for account holders. It is important to remember that interest is typically credited in the months following the conclusion of a financial year. If you do not see the 8.25% credit immediately, it may simply be a processing lag within the epfoho system rather than an error. However, keeping tabs on your account via these digital avenues ensures you aren't left guessing. If your balance remains stagnant for an extended period, it serves as an early warning to coordinate with your HR department or the local PF office to resolve potential remittance issues before they become permanent gaps in your retirement corpus.
