Centre Launches Green Summer Camps: Schools to Run Environment Activities From June to End of Month

As part of a national push for environmental stewardship, schools across India are pivoting their summer schedules to host experiential learning focused on sustainability.

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), operating under the Union Ministry of Education, has officially announced the rollout of "Green Summer Camps" to coincide with the observance of World Environment Day 2026. This national initiative, which invites schools to run environment-focused activities from June 5 to June 30, marks a significant shift in how educational institutions engage with students during the annual break.

By integrating these camps into the existing "Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE" campaign, the government aims to move beyond classroom theory. The program encourages schools to facilitate hands-on learning experiences that foster a deeper connection between students and the natural world, aligning with the core objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Focusing on Sustainable Living

The curriculum for these camps is anchored in the seven key themes of Mission LiFE. These categories—which include saving water, saving energy, reducing waste, reducing e-waste, adopting sustainable food systems, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and saying no to single-use plastic—serve as the foundation for the student projects. By tackling these specific areas, the ministry hopes to instill long-term behavioral changes in the youth.

While summer camps globally—from Nashville to New York—often focus on recreational pursuits or general enrichment, this Indian initiative is distinctly policy-driven. It seeks to standardize environmental consciousness at the grassroots level by requiring participating schools to document their efforts.

Administrative Guidelines and Participation

To ensure the efficacy of the programme, the ministry has mandated that all schools upload detailed reports of their conducted activities onto a centralized digital portal, ecoclubs.education.gov.in. This digital tracking is intended to provide the Centre with a real-time overview of how effectively environmental awareness is being disseminated across different regions.

The timeline of June 5 to June 30 is strategically chosen to capture student interest immediately following the start of the summer holiday season.
