Tensions mount in Rajasthan after the midnight killing of a prominent religious leader, prompting saints to demand swift justice and systemic protection.

The tranquility of the Chandresal Math in Kota was shattered late Friday night when unidentified assailants infiltrated the premises, launching a lethal attack on Mahant Devanand Maharaj. The 35-year-old priest, who had presided over the Mayapuri Akhada for the past four years, was found in a critical condition, having been repeatedly stabbed while he slept. Despite being rushed to the Maharao Bhim Singh (MBS) Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, leaving behind a community in shock.

A Targeted Attack?

Local law enforcement has launched a multi-pronged investigation into the killing. According to Additional SP Subhash Chandra, initial findings suggest the attackers targeted the Mahant while he was asleep in his quarters, separate from where another priest, Nandanvan Maharaj, was resting. A primary line of inquiry involves an internal power struggle; the monastery oversees a significant estate of over 700 bighas of land, and investigators are looking into long-standing property disputes that have plagued the institution.

The victim’s family has corroborated the suspicion that this was a premeditated act. Budhraj Gurjar, the brother of the deceased, revealed that the Mahant had spoken of a conspiracy being orchestrated against him. "Tensions had been brewing for some time and he had been receiving threats," Gurjar stated, noting that he had spoken with the Maharaj just hours before the attack. The shift from a reported medical emergency to the grim reality of a murder has left the family demanding immediate answers from the authorities.

Calls for Justice

The aftermath of the incident has seen a significant mobilization of religious leaders across the region. By Saturday, a large gathering of saints and seers had assembled at the MBS Hospital, expressing deep-seated concerns over the safety of religious figures in the state. The mood among the collective was defiant; Ramdas Ji Maharaj, general secretary of the All India Sant Samiti (Hadoti Division), explicitly stated that the fraternity would refuse to claim the body from the post-mortem room until the culprits were behind bars.

This tragedy brings into sharp focus the precarious intersection of religious institutionalism and wealth management. With vast land holdings often managed by these monasteries, property-related conflicts have historically been a flashpoint for violence in the region. As the investigation continues, the administration faces mounting pressure to not only resolve this specific case but to address the broader security concerns raised by the local religious leadership regarding the protection of those living within these historic hermitages.
