Bihar MLC Polls: The Smooth Path to Power and the Impending Exit of Deepak Prakash
Bihar MLC चुनाव: पवन सिंह सहित सभी 10 उम्मीदवार निर्विरोध जीते, दीपक प्रकाश का पत्ता साफ
As the curtain falls on the Bihar MLC election, the uncontested victory of ten candidates marks both a calculated political settlement and a looming crisis for the state’s Panchayati Raj minister.
The corridors of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha saw a quiet conclusion to what was expected to be a competitive cycle. With the withdrawal deadline passing this Thursday, all ten candidates in the fray for the vacant Bihar MLC seats have been elected unopposed. Because the number of nominations matched the available seats, the electoral process bypassed the need for voting entirely, cementing a pre-negotiated power-sharing arrangement among the major parties.
The list of victors reflects the current coalition arithmetic. The BJP secured four berths, sending Pawan Singh—whose candidacy drew significant attention—alongside Sanjay Mayukh, Sheila Pandit, and Anil Thakur to the Upper House. The JDU matched this tally, successfully ushering in Bharti Mehta, Nishant Kumar, Lalan Prasad, and Shivani Devi. The RJD and LJP (Ram Vilas) rounded out the list with Sunil Singh and Ashraf Ansari, respectively.
The Tenure Breakdown
While the victory is a collective one, the terms of service vary. Lalan Prasad, who fills the seat vacated by Nitish Kumar’s transition to the Rajya Sabha, will serve a term lasting until 2030. The remaining nine members, having secured their spots in this bihar legislative election, will serve until 2032. All successful candidates collected their certificates of election immediately following the announcement, formalizing their entry into the legislative council.
The Bigger Picture: Political Fallout
The smooth, uncontested nature of this primary result belies a brewing uncertainty for the Samrat Chaudhary-led government. The most pressing question now concerns Deepak Prakash, the current Panchayati Raj Minister. As a non-member of either house, his cabinet position was contingent on securing a legislative seat within a specific timeframe. With these ten seats now filled and closed, the path for his legislative entry has effectively vanished.
The political math here is stark. By opting for a consensus-based distribution of seats, the major parties have sidelined the immediate necessity of a floor test, but they have left the Upendra Kushwaha faction—and specifically his son, Deepak Prakash—in a precarious position. Whether this signals a reshuffle or a deeper shift in coalition dynamics remains to be seen. For now, the Pawan Singh entry into the Council acts as a clear indicator of the BJP’s strengthened hold within the upper house, leaving the state cabinet to reckon with the impending exit of one of its ministers.
