Bihar Fast-Tracks Direct Government Jobs for Elite Athletes to Boost Sports Culture

The state cabinet has cleared the 2026 amendment rules, creating a clear, merit-based pathway for medal winners and national representatives to secure gazetted and non-gazetted state posts.

For years, talented athletes in Bihar often faced a crossroads: choose professional sports and risk financial uncertainty, or pivot to traditional career paths. This week, the state government moved to bridge that gap. By approving the 'Bihar Direct Recruitment of Outstanding Sportspersons (Amendment) Rules, 2026', the cabinet has effectively formalised a quota system that rewards performance with guaranteed state employment.

Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh, herself an accomplished shooter, has been the driving force behind this policy. The framework is tiered, ensuring that those who reach the highest levels of international and national competition are compensated accordingly. At the top end, Olympic medalists and those who have represented India in cricket or other Olympic disciplines will now be eligible for positions at pay level-09, carrying a grade pay of ₹5,400.

The structure extends deep into the national sports ecosystem. Players who have represented India in Asian or Commonwealth Games—even without a podium finish—along with medal winners from those events, are eligible for level-07 roles with a grade pay of ₹4,600. Furthermore, gold and silver medalists at the Senior National Championships and National Games will secure entry-level government roles at pay level-06, reflecting a grade pay of ₹4,200.

By removing the anxiety of future employment, the state is attempting to incentivise long-term dedication.
