Bengaluru’s Purple Line Disruptions: From Chain Snags to Infrastructure Failures

A series of technical glitches, ranging from a passenger’s metallic chain causing a door jam to a major power system failure, has left Namma Metro commuters facing repeated delays and uncertainty.
The reliability of the Namma Metro network faced a challenging week, as a succession of technical hurdles disrupted the daily commute for thousands of passengers across the Purple Line. The most recent incident occurred on Thursday at the Cubbon Park metro station, where train services were held up for 17 minutes after a passenger’s metallic chain became lodged in a door’s guide-way. This minor but intrusive obstruction prevented the doors from closing, eventually forcing officials to deboard passengers and leading to a cascading delay for at least five subsequent trains.
A Pattern of Technical Vulnerability
This incident followed a more severe disruption earlier in the week that paralyzed the network. On Tuesday evening, a major technical failure near the Anil Kumble Circle and Cubbon Park section triggered a loud explosion sound, causing panic among passengers. Investigations by BMRCL technicians revealed that a "third rail"—the electrical supply system—had been damaged. As the train traversed a curved section of the underground tunnel, vibrations caused a protective fiber cover to shift, creating a gap that led to a power supply failure and subsequent damage to the train’s Current Collector Device (CCD).
The scale of the Tuesday failure was significant. With the power supply compromised, the train stalled at Cubbon Park station, forcing authorities to restrict operations to the Magadi Road-Challaghatta and MG Road-Whitefield segments for an extended period. Commuters, caught off guard during the evening rush hour, were left to scramble for alternative transport, with many reporting steep price surges from ride-hailing apps and auto-rickshaws.
The Commuter Experience
The disconnect between the incident and passenger information remained a sore point. While BMRCL officials worked through the night to restore normalcy by Wednesday morning, the lack of timely communication during the Tuesday crisis exacerbated the frustration of stranded travelers. Many were left waiting in crowded stations, unsure of when or if their train would arrive, highlighting a critical gap in the transit authority's crisis management protocols.
Why it matters
These back-to-back disruptions signal an urgent need for the BMRCL to reassess its maintenance and contingency planning. While officials have clarified that the system is robust—dismissing claims about "old trains" as baseless—the vulnerability of the third rail to tunnel-induced vibrations suggests that current safety audits may need to be more frequent, especially in older, high-traffic underground stretches. For a city that relies heavily on its metro to mitigate crippling road congestion, the cost of these delays is not just measured in minutes, but in the erosion of public trust in the city’s primary mass transit backbone. As Bengaluru continues to expand its rail footprint, the operational integrity of existing corridors will remain the true test of the city's urban planning.
