Ayodhya under scrutiny: Police raids intensify in Ram Temple donation theft case

As the investigation into the alleged embezzlement of temple funds gains momentum, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust faces a leadership crisis.

The sanctity of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya faces an unexpected test of transparency. On Sunday, police teams, accompanied by local magistrates, fanned out across the city to conduct simultaneous raids on the homes of eight individuals currently behind bars. These men—including Lav Kush Mishra, Avinash Shukla, and Ramashankar alias Tinnu Yadav—were key personnel tasked with counting the cash and valuables flowing into the shrine as offerings.

The scope of the alleged breach is significant. Investigators have already recovered Rs 79.85 lakh, a figure that highlights the scale of what is being framed by the prosecution as a calculated betrayal of trust. The case, registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, invokes serious charges ranging from criminal breach of trust and theft by a servant to violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act. With the accused currently in judicial custody, the police are poised to seek formal custodial remand on Monday to further interrogate the network behind this pilferage.

A crisis at the top

The fallout has hit the upper echelons of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. In a development that signals deep internal churn, the trust confirmed on Saturday that it had received the resignations of general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra. While the trust plans to deliberate on these exits in its upcoming meeting, the timing is telling. By proactively requesting the SIT probe that led to this FIR, the trust is attempting to preempt accusations of negligence, even as it insists that high-value offerings like silver bricks and jewelry remain secure.

The bigger picture: Why this matters

Beyond the immediate criminal proceedings, this case exposes the growing pains of managing one of India’s most high-profile religious institutions. As the temple transitions from a construction site to a global pilgrimage destination, the reliance on manual cash counting and internal oversight is under intense scrutiny. The Opposition has wasted no time in politicizing the incident, with figures like Akhilesh Yadav framing the controversy as a symptom of deeper administrative failures, while the state government’s insistence on a rigorous SIT probe suggests a desire to prevent this scandal from damaging the project's larger socio-political narrative.

For the millions of devotees, the question is no longer just about the missing lakhs; it is about the structural integrity of the trust. Whether the resignations of top officials lead to a total overhaul of the temple’s financial management or are merely a temporary shield, the police investigation into these eight men is likely just the first chapter in a long-drawn legal battle over accountability in Ayodhya.
