Ayodhya Offering Row: Priyanka Chaturvedi Digs Up 2020 Audit Warnings Amid SIT Probe

As the SIT submits its preliminary findings on alleged irregularities in Ram Mandir offerings, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi points to ignored internal audit warnings from years ago.

The corridors of power in Delhi and Lucknow are buzzing with a fresh controversy surrounding the Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Following allegations of massive financial irregularities—with some opposition voices estimating the potential pilferage of offerings to reach the ₹200 crore mark—the narrative has shifted from mere accusation to documented oversight. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has reignited the debate, pointing to internal audit recommendations that were reportedly filed away and forgotten long before the temple’s current operational chaos.

The Audit That Never Was

Chaturvedi’s critique centers on the timeline of the Trust’s administrative setup. According to her, shortly after the Trust was formed in 2020, an audit firm was engaged to provide advice on risk management and internal controls. The firm reportedly identified critical gaps and suggested a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to safeguard donations and precious metals. "They were warned six years ago," Chaturvedi stated on social media, alleging that the failure to implement these professional suggestions directly enabled the "mahapaap" (great sin) of theft involving cash and jewelry.

The SIT, constituted by the Yogi Adityanath government to investigate these claims, submitted its 150-page preliminary report to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad this past Tuesday. The findings are sobering: the three-member team reportedly confirmed significant irregularities in the counting process, missing or deleted CCTV footage, and a startling lack of systematic records for gold and silver ornaments. A final report is expected within the week, which will then be presented to the Chief Minister for further administrative or legal action.

Why It Matters

This incident transcends a simple case of administrative lapse; it strikes at the heart of the governance model applied to high-profile religious trusts in India. When the management of a site of such immense national and religious significance faces charges of "maha bhrashtachar" (mega-corruption), it raises uncomfortable questions about the oversight mechanisms governing public contributions. For the state government, the challenge is two-fold: ensuring the integrity of the donation process and insulating the temple's administration from the perception of political patronage. The political heat, which has also drawn in figures like Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, signals that the opposition is keen to maintain pressure on the BJP-led government by linking these financial lapses to broader questions of accountability.

While political discourse often shifts towards figures like Arvind Kejriwal, the current focus remains squarely on the procedural failures within the temple trust. The pattern suggests that as these institutions scale, the gap between their traditional management structures and the modern, high-stakes requirements of financial auditing remains a massive vulnerability. Whether this SIT report leads to a systemic overhaul or remains a mere diagnostic exercise will determine the future credibility of the temple's fiscal management.
