As Western Disturbance Fades, Delhi Braces for a Sharp Rise in Mercury
Delhi temperatures set to rise, mercury may touch 41°C by Tuesday
After a brief, rain-washed reprieve, the capital is set to trade its pleasant winds for a steady climb toward 41°C by Tuesday.
The capital’s brief tryst with unseasonably cool weather is coming to an end. After a western disturbance brought welcome thunderstorms and wind speeds clocking 76 kmph at Palam, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a clear signal: the heat is returning. While Safdarjung recorded a modest 5.9 mm of rainfall and the city enjoyed a Saturday with temperatures four notches below average, the trend lines are shifting.
The Outlook for the Week
As the current weather system weakens, the relief provided by cloud cover will evaporate. Saturday’s maximum settled at 35.6°C, but this was merely a temporary pause. Forecasts indicate that Sunday will see temperatures hover between 36°C and 38°C. By Tuesday, the mercury is expected to touch the 41°C mark. Nighttime conditions will also reflect this shift, with minimums anticipated to climb toward 29°C by June 19.
While the Hindustan Times and Times reports highlight the volatile nature of this season’s temperature fluctuations, the immediate outlook is one of consistent warming. Air quality remains a rare silver lining, holding steady in the ‘satisfactory’ category with an AQI of 96 as of Saturday. This is a stark contrast to the usual post-rain pollution spikes, offering a small respite for residents before the full intensity of the summer heat sets in.
Why it matters
The broader pattern here is one of atmospheric instability. We are seeing a tug-of-war between lingering western disturbances and the natural progression of the summer sun. For a city like Delhi, these sharp, 5-degree jumps in just a few days complicate everything from energy demand to public health planning. When the transition from "pleasant" to "heatwave-prone" happens this rapidly, it leaves little time for the urban infrastructure—or the population—to adjust. The takeaway isn't just about a single high-temperature day; it is about the increasing frequency of these abrupt, extreme swings that define modern weather cycles in North India.
Monitoring the NCR
While the focus remains on the capital, the weather impact is being felt across the National Capital Region. Residents tracking the weather gurugram updates will find similar patterns of rising heat as the weekend progresses. For now, the IMD’s forecast of gusty winds and potential thunderstorms on Sunday remains the final barrier before a more sustained, hotter phase takes hold next week.
