Starting June 16, the 74th Vande Bharat train will bypass its old path to serve a new set of stations, shifting focus toward Gurdaspur and Batala.

For pilgrims and business travelers frequently shuttling between the spiritual heart of Punjab and the base camp for Vaishno Devi, the commute is about to change. Indian Railways has officially confirmed a route revision for the 74th Vande Bharat Express, shifting the train away from its former Jalandhar Cantt alignment to a more localized corridor through Gurdaspur.

Effective June 16, 2026, the train—which initially began operations in August 2025—will follow a new trajectory. The Firozpur Division of Northern Railway announced that the updated path will now include key stops at Batala Junction, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot, in addition to the existing Jammu Tawi halt. This shift is designed to expand the reach of the Vande Bharat network into regions that were previously bypassed by the semi-high-speed service.

Revised Timings and Schedule

If you are planning a trip, it is time to check your calendar. The train (No. 26405/26406) will continue to run six days a week, remaining idle on Saturdays. The outbound service from Amritsar will depart at 16:40 hours and reach Katra at 21:45, a total journey time of approximately five hours and five minutes over the 285 km stretch.

For the return leg, the train departs from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 06:40, pulling into Amritsar at 11:40. Passengers should note that the administrative code for these operations has been updated in the system to reflect these changes, so ensure your bookings align with the new station sequence to avoid confusion at the platform.

Why it matters

This rerouting marks a tactical shift in how Indian Railways deploys its flagship semi-high-speed assets. While early Vande Bharat routes often prioritized major metropolitan hubs, the move to include Gurdaspur and Batala signals an effort to integrate Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities into the premium travel fold. By bringing modern, high-speed rail access to these regions, the railways are effectively decentralizing the benefits of the Vande Bharat project, making the commute for cross-border regional travelers significantly more efficient than traditional mail or express trains.

Navigating the change

The transition has been months in the making, following approval from the Railway Board back in March. For regular commuters, the adjustment is minor, but it highlights the evolving nature of the network. As the Vande Bharat fleet grows, the focus is clearly moving toward optimizing existing lines to maximize passenger convenience. If you have existing tickets booked for travel post-June 16, keep an eye on your registered contact details, as the railway system typically updates passengers on automated schedule changes.
