Alleged Embezzlement in Ayodhya: Congress Targets PM Modi Over Ram Temple Donations

The Opposition is mounting pressure on the Centre to dissolve the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust following the arrest of eight individuals linked to a financial irregularities probe.

The sanctity of the Ayodhya Ram temple project has been thrust into the heart of a political storm this week. Following the arrest of eight individuals connected to the alleged theft of temple donations, the Congress has launched a blistering offensive against the Union and Uttar Pradesh governments. At a press conference in New Delhi, senior leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh demanded the immediate dissolution of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, citing a systemic failure to protect funds contributed by millions of devotees.

The central grievance centers on the accountability of the Trust, which was constituted directly by the Union government. Congress leaders argue that since the government appointed the Trust members, Prime Minister Narendra Modi owes the public a clear explanation regarding the alleged diversion of funds. Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, speaking from Wayanad, termed the developments "tragic and shameful," emphasizing that the donations were an expression of deep-seated faith from citizens across India.

A Growing Web of Allegations

The controversy gained momentum after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) flagged major lapses in the management of contributions. According to reports, daily donations to the temple have plummeted from a range of ₹10 lakh–₹15 lakh to approximately ₹80,000 as public trust in the current oversight mechanisms wanes. Beyond the specific theft, critics are revisiting older controversies, including past allegations of land acquisition irregularities and the reported removal of a cash-counting agent, Mahipal Singh, who had allegedly flagged financial discrepancies before being dismissed.

The Congress has doubled down on its demand for an investigation supervised by a sitting Supreme Court judge. They argue that internal inquiries conducted by the Trust have been superficial and ignored, particularly allegations involving the deletion of CCTV footage and the mishandling of physical cash reserves. While eight suspects now face charges that could carry life imprisonment, the Opposition insists that the arrests are merely the tip of the iceberg, demanding that the Trust be held collectively responsible.

Why it matters

This crisis transcends a simple case of financial fraud; it strikes at the intersection of political capital and religious sentiment. For the BJP, the Ram temple is a cornerstone of its ideological and electoral narrative. Any sustained perception that the "people’s faith" is being mishandled carries significant political risk, particularly as Opposition figures like Akhilesh Yadav and Uddhav Thackeray pivot to the issue to challenge the BJP’s moral authority in Ayodhya. The immediate challenge for the government is not just the legal prosecution of the eight arrested, but managing the erosion of institutional credibility that has allowed the Opposition to dictate the discourse on national television and in the corridors of Parliament.
