A Rare June Chill: Delhi-NCR Braces for More Rain as IMD Issues Yellow Alert

After an overnight spell of rain brought a sharp drop in temperatures, the capital remains on high alert for further thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The sweltering heat that usually defines June in the capital has been unceremoniously pushed aside this week. Residents waking up on Friday were greeted by unseasonably cool, windy weather, a refreshing contrast to the typical early summer furnace. The base weather station at Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 22.8 degrees Celsius—a staggering 5.2 notches below the seasonal average and a sharp 7.2-degree fall from just 24 hours prior.

This localized dip is part of a wider atmospheric shift triggered by a western disturbance currently sweeping across northwestern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the National Capital Region under a yellow alert for June 13, warning of thundersqualls and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. For those living in Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Greater Noida, the forecast remains consistent: expect intermittent spells of light to moderate rain throughout the afternoon and evening.

A City Caught in a Cold Snap

The temperature drop was felt uniformly across the region. While Safdarjung saw the mercury settle at a pleasant maximum of 34.6 degrees Celsius, other pockets felt even cooler. The Ridge recorded a minimum of 20.9 degrees Celsius, and Palam stayed at 21.6 degrees Celsius, both significantly below the expected norms for this time of year. Across the NCR, the sudden chill has provided a brief, albeit welcome, respite from the humidity that often precedes the full onset of the monsoon.

The IMD’s latest update suggests that this unsettled weather pattern is not a one-off event. With the southwest monsoon advancing into southern and eastern India, the atmospheric conditions are ripe for continued thunderstorm activity across the north. Residents should prepare for more cloudy skies through Saturday, as the meteorological office continues to monitor the trajectory of the current disturbance.

Why it Matters: The Shifting Patterns of June

This unusual cooling serves as a reminder of how volatile the pre-monsoon phase has become. While a "cool June" is a relief for commuters and households, these sharp temperature fluctuations often indicate a complex interaction between lingering western disturbances and the early northward push of the monsoon winds.

Beyond the immediate relief from the heat, this weather pattern highlights the increasing unpredictability of North India's transition months. While the current forecast focuses on the NCR, broader weather shifts are affecting multiple states simultaneously. The trend of strong, gusty winds and unseasonal rain—now a recurring theme in the IMD bulletins—suggests that the window between the end of the summer heat and the arrival of the rains is narrowing, often resulting in sudden, high-intensity weather events rather than a gradual seasonal shift.
