A Dream Journey Ends in Tragedy: CRPF Jawan and Kin Killed in Pithoragarh Road Accident

What began as a celebratory drive in a brand-new vehicle turned into a nightmare for a family traveling from Kathgodam to Kanalichhina.

The joy of purchasing a new कार (car) is a milestone for any Indian middle-class family, but for one CRPF jawan, that pride was cut short in a matter of seconds. On the morning of June 4, Baldev Kumar, posted with the CRPF, set out from his Kathgodam residence with his wife Neetu, his brother Rajendra, and his two children, Akshita and Aarav. They were headed toward Kanalichhina in Pithoragarh, optimistic about the road ahead. However, between Maroda Khan and Bantoli, their vehicle met with a catastrophic accident, transforming a long-awaited family excursion into a scene of unspeakable grief.

The impact of the crash was immediate and devastating. Both Baldev Kumar and his brother, Rajendra, lost their lives at the spot. Neetu, who sustained severe injuries, remained unaware of the full extent of the tragedy while receiving medical attention. According to reports, she was seen on a stretcher, tearfully asking about the welfare of her husband and children, shielded by onlookers from the grim reality of the loss of her husband and brother-in-law.

A Community in Shock

The tragedy triggered an immediate response from local authorities and residents. ADM KN Goswami, SDM Neetu Dangar, and teams from the SDRF and local police coordinated a rescue operation to pull the survivors from the mangled wreckage. Local representatives, including municipal president Govind Verma, were present at the hospital to manage the outpouring of support as news of the incident rippled through the region. While the children, Akshita and Aarav, survived with injuries to their legs and heads, the family has been shattered by the loss of two of its primary breadwinners.

Why it Matters: The Pattern of Road Safety

This incident, while personal to the affected family, highlights a recurring, sobering case study regarding road safety on hilly terrain. While the original article and highlights provided by multiple outlets focus on the immediate grief, the broader context remains the precarious nature of road travel in mountainous districts. Even with a modern, well-maintained car, the combination of treacherous topography and the inherent risks of long-distance driving in regions like Pithoragarh often results in high-fatality incidents.

The incident serves as a grim reminder that despite the aspirational growth in vehicle ownership, infrastructure and road-readiness remain critical challenges. As the Hindustan reports and other regional sources continue to cover the aftermath, the focus has shifted to the urgent need for better traffic management and safety awareness, particularly for families navigating these high-risk corridors. For now, the administration has sent the deceased for post-mortem examinations, leaving a family to grapple with a void that no compensation or inquiry can fill.
