A 20-Minute Performance, A 13.5 Lakh Fee, and the Growing Divide Within AMMA
Actress Mala Parvathy has levelled a sharp critique at the film body AMMA regarding the opaque financial dealings surrounding Stephen Devassy’s recent stage appearance.
The internal friction within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has spilled into the public domain once again, this time centered on a musical performance that has left members questioning the organization's fiscal discipline. At the heart of the controversy is a 13.5 lakh rupee payout to musician Stephen Devassy for a 20-minute set during the association's recent family gathering.
The issue gained traction when actress Mala Parvathy took a sarcastic jab at the transaction. While clarifying that she does not believe the allegations of impropriety were aimed directly at Devassy, she underscored a deeper governance failure: the executive committee had never officially sanctioned the program or its hefty budget. "I am glad to have it confirmed that his fee for a 20-minute show is indeed 13.5 lakh," she noted, highlighting the disconnect between the leadership's spending and the membership's oversight.
The Defense and the Discrepancy
As the name Stephen Devassy began trending across social platforms, the musician moved to clarify his position, countering claims that he had pocketed an exorbitant sum for a mere cameo. In a media interaction, Devassy explained that the 13.5 lakh figure was not merely for the 20-minute stage performance. Instead, he framed it as a comprehensive production cost covering a two-week period of preparation, pre-production, mixing, and mastering, involving a team of nearly 12 professionals.
Despite this explanation, the protest led by actress Ansiba Hassan—who had raised the issue both publicly and within the AMMA general body—highlights a significant breakdown in communication. Ansiba’s contention, supported by other members, remains that the executive committee bypassed protocol. She suggested that had the association approached the musician with an official request, he might have performed for free, a sentiment that casts a shadow over the decision-making process of the current leadership.
Why It Matters
This episode is more than just a dispute over a performance fee; it reflects the intensifying demand for transparency within Kerala’s influential film bodies. When an organization of this scale spends member funds without explicit executive approval, it creates a fertile ground for mistrust. The controversy serves as a litmus test for the current management, proving that members are no longer willing to accept "business as usual" regarding financial transparency. As AMMA faces internal scrutiny, the pressure to formalize expenditure protocols is mounting, signaling a shift toward greater accountability in the way the fraternity manages its common purse.
