37-Year-Old Brazilian Woman Arrested After Fraudulent Adoption Scheme

A bizarre case of identity theft has come to light in Brazil, where a woman successfully posed as a minor to infiltrate unsuspecting families and secure financial support.

In a case that has left authorities in Brazil baffled, a 37-year-old woman identified as Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira has been arrested for orchestrating a sophisticated multi-state fraud scheme. Operating under the alias "Gabriele," the woman allegedly convinced a family in the Pirabeiraba district of Joinville to take her in as their daughter, maintaining the ruse for 14 months before her eventual capture on June 3.

A Calculated Deception

The level of detail Oliveira employed to sustain her false identity was extensive. According to Santa Catarina police, she relied on a combination of fabricated trauma and medical misinformation to build trust. To explain her adult physical appearance, the woman claimed she had been forced to undergo hormone treatments during a troubled childhood. She further bolstered her narrative by feigning autism and recounting harrowing stories of abuse, including claims that her biological father had forced her into prostitution and participated in dark witchcraft rituals.

To reinforce the performance within the household, Oliveira reportedly adopted childlike mannerisms, including the use of pacifiers, baby bottles, and comfort blankets. The family, who had grown emotionally attached to her, went as far as hosting a 12th birthday celebration and covering the costs of her healthcare, including weight-loss medication. Police state that the couple had even begun the process of formalizing her adoption, unaware that the person they were caring for was a grown woman with a history of similar offenses.

Patterns of a Serial Offender

The deception only unraveled when a suspicious relative began researching the suspect’s background online, eventually alerting local authorities to similar incidents reported across the country. Investigators have since linked Oliveira to at least seven separate fraud cases spanning states including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and Goiás. In one previous instance, she allegedly inserted roughly 100 metal needles into her own skin to bolster her claims of physical abuse.

This case highlights a disturbing trend of social engineering where predators exploit the kindness of families and religious organizations. By presenting herself as a vulnerable victim of abandonment or systemic abuse, Oliveira successfully bypassed the skepticism of social workers and volunteers. While the woman is currently undergoing a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in child welfare and the necessity of rigorous background verification, even in seemingly altruistic settings.
