Tragedy on the Highway: Diesel Tanker Driver Killed in Collision Near Hathwani
टे्रलर और टैकर की टक्कर में चालक की मौत
A routine transport run turned fatal on the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway this Saturday morning, leaving behind a grim scene of wreckage and an unsettling rush to loot spilled fuel.
The stillness of a Saturday morning on the Varanasi-Shaktinagar highway was shattered at 10:30 AM near the Hathwani turn in Sonbhadra. A coal-laden trailer and a diesel tanker collided head-on, a violent impact that claimed the life of 34-year-old Raju Yadav. Yadav, a resident of Indira Nagar, Mumbai, was behind the wheel of the tanker, transporting fuel toward Renukoot when the collision occurred.
While the trailer driver escaped the crash with his life, the force of the impact left Yadav severely injured. Hathinala Station House Officer (SHO) Udaybhan Rao confirmed that police arrived at the scene shortly after the distress call. Yadav was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Chopan, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries.
A Dangerous Scramble
As the wreckage lay across the highway, a secondary, more disturbing scene unfolded. With the tanker ruptured, diesel began leaking onto the tarmac. Rather than showing restraint, a crowd of local villagers quickly gathered, some seen brazenly filling buckets and jerrycans with the leaking fuel.
This behavior, which often follows tanker accidents on Indian highways, turned a tragic site into a volatile risk zone. Police were forced to intervene, clearing the onlookers before the situation could escalate into a fire hazard or further obstruct the emergency response. Traffic on this vital artery was brought to a standstill until officers managed to clear the vehicles and secure the area.
Why it matters
This incident highlights the precarious reality of India’s heavy-vehicle transport corridors. When a driver like Raju Yadav dies, it isn’t just a statistic; it exposes the vulnerability of those who keep the nation's supply chain moving. The immediate looting of fuel—a recurring trend in such accidents—reflects a deeper, more troubling disregard for safety protocols and human life in the face of potential gain.
Beyond the immediate legal proceedings and the pending autopsy, the authorities now face the task of ensuring that such stretches of the highway, known for their high coal-traffic volume, are better regulated. Accidents here don’t just block roads; they disrupt the livelihoods of countless others and highlight the urgent need for stricter traffic enforcement on industrial routes. The police have registered the case and are currently conducting a legal investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
