Tragedy at Juhu Beach: 16-Year-Old Teen Drowns During Mumbai Vacation
Came to spend vacation, teen dies after drowning at Juhu beach

A fun-filled afternoon at Juhu Beach ended in heartbreak after a teenager from Uttar Pradesh was swept away by strong sea currents while visiting the city.
The incident occurred on Friday evening near the JW Marriott Hotel at Juhu Chowpatty, a stretch of the coastline that remains a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. Sarfaraz Khan, a 16-year-old from the Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh, had arrived in Mumbai just two weeks ago to spend his summer vacation with his cousin, Kharman Ali, a fruit vendor living in Sakinaka. What was intended to be a memorable outing with friends turned fatal when the youth, who reportedly did not know how to swim, was pulled into deeper waters by powerful waves.
A Struggle Against The Tide
According to accounts from those present, Sarfaraz had travelled to the beach with three friends—Mohammed Kaif Khan, Takalluf Khan, and Zababul Hasan—reaching the shore around 4 pm. While one friend remained on the sand to keep watch over their belongings, the others ventured into the water. Takalluf Khan later recounted the harrowing moments when the sea turned treacherous. He described how sudden, massive waves dragged Sarfaraz deeper into the ocean. Despite desperate attempts by his companions to reach him, the strength of the current forced them to retreat to the shore to save themselves.
Police officials noted that the group had ventured into the water despite warnings from lifeguards regarding high tide conditions. As the situation escalated, the friends sought help from people nearby, prompting a response from the beach’s lifeguard team and the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Though search efforts were launched immediately and the teenager was eventually pulled from the water, he had already stopped breathing. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Safety Concerns Amidst Seasonal Crowds
The Santacruz police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. This tragedy follows a concerning trend of water-related accidents along Mumbai’s coastline. Civic authorities often deploy over 90 lifeguards across major beaches, including Juhu, Versova, and Girgaon, particularly during the monsoon and summer months when sea conditions become unpredictable. However, officials emphasize that the sheer volume of visitors often makes it difficult to monitor every individual who chooses to ignore safety protocols.
For the family of the deceased, the loss is devastating. Kharman Ali, the cousin who acted as his guardian in the city, expressed his deep grief, stating that he would have prevented the outing had he been awake when the group departed. The body of the teenager was handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination, with plans to transport him back to his native village in Uttar Pradesh for final rites. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the inherent dangers lurking in the Arabian Sea, especially for those unfamiliar with its shifting currents.
