The Road to the Assembly: Yadu’s New Role and the Political Crosscurrents

After a high-profile public spat, the former KSRTC driver finds a fresh start in the Legislative Assembly following a recommendation from Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen.

The sight of a public transport bus driver becoming the protagonist of a state-wide controversy is rare, but that is exactly what happened when Yadu, a KSRTC driver, found himself at the centre of a heated roadside argument involving the former Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, ആര്യ രാജേന്ദ്രന്. What began as a transit dispute quickly spiralled into a battle of narratives, leading to Yadu’s exit from the state transport corporation and a subsequent shift in his professional trajectory.

Following his dismissal from the KSRTC, Yadu joined the INTUC. The latest development in this saga sees him finding a new role as a temporary driver at the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This appointment comes directly on the heels of a recommendation letter sent by Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen to Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

Conflicting Narratives

The circumstances surrounding Yadu’s previous termination remain a point of contention. Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar had earlier maintained that the dismissal was not linked to the incident with ആര്യ രാജേന്ദ്രന്, but was instead due to a serious safety violation. The Minister alleged that Yadu had been driving while on a phone call for nearly six hours during a trip from Thrissur to Thiruvananthapuram, endangering dozens of passengers.

However, Yadu has challenged this official version. Citing documents obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act, he disputes the Minister’s claims, asserting that the reasons provided for his removal do not align with the factual record. While the police commissioner had reportedly submitted call detail records to the KSRTC CMD to substantiate the safety claims, Yadu’s move to the Assembly floor brings a new layer of political intrigue to an already public-facing dispute.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the intersection of personal grievance, bureaucratic accountability, and political patronage. When a public servant is caught in a high-profile public conflict, the subsequent administrative actions—and the reactions from political representatives—often become mirrors of the state's internal power dynamics.

The fact that an MLA intervened to secure employment for an individual embroiled in a controversy involving a prominent political figure signals how quickly personal disputes can be subsumed into the broader legislative landscape. For the public, the episode serves as a reminder of how the line between administrative disciplinary action and political rehabilitation remains remarkably thin in Kerala’s public sphere. Whether this appointment will invite further scrutiny or settle the dust on a long-drawn row remains to be seen.
