South Bengal Weather Update: Rain Forecast Brings High Winds and Rising Temperatures

While light to moderate showers offer a reprieve, the Alipore Meteorological Department warns of a sharp mercury climb in Kolkata.

The grey skies over South Bengal are currently deceptive. While the Alipore Meteorological Department’s latest rain forecast confirms that light to moderate rain will continue across the region, the relief it brings is temporary. Despite the clouds, the mercury is set to make a sharp comeback, leaving residents to grapple with a sudden spike in the maximum temperature.

For Kolkata, the shift is palpable. After recording a maximum of 30.2 degrees Celsius on Monday—roughly 2.8 degrees below the seasonal average—the city is bracing for a climb. Experts expect the mercury to hover around the 33-degree mark today. This peculiar weather pattern, where rain does little to suppress the heat, is becoming a recurring headache for the city's commuters.

Orange and Yellow Alerts

The south bengal update highlights a divide in the intensity of the incoming weather system. While all districts—including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and the two 24 Parganas—are slated for varying levels of rainfall, the severity varies significantly. A "Yellow Alert" remains in place for much of the region, where winds are expected to clock in at 30-40 kmph.

However, the situation is more volatile in East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. These five districts have been placed under an "Orange Alert," with the weather office anticipating gusty conditions reaching 40-50 kmph. These high-speed winds accompanying the showers necessitate extra caution for those outdoors.

Looking Ahead: Weather Tomorrow

As we look toward the weather tomorrow, the pattern of intermittent, localized precipitation is expected to persist. Many districts, including the North and South 24 Parganas and parts of the Burdwan belt, will likely see continued light to moderate showers accompanied by storms. Meanwhile, the coastal and western districts, such as Bankura and Purulia, may experience a dip in rainfall intensity, though the risk of sudden thunderstorms remains.

Why It Matters

This oscillation between localized storm cells and rising heat represents a complex shift in regional climatic conditions. For a state like West Bengal, these erratic weather spells impact more than just the daily commute; they influence agricultural cycles and put a strain on power grids as humidity levels fluctuate. While a single rain event provides a fleeting sense of comfort, the underlying trend of rising daytime temperatures suggests that the transition to the next season will be anything but stable. Residents should stay updated through official channels, as these localized, high-intensity wind events can shift rapidly.
