A clinical bowling display and a match-winning partnership from Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Matthew Short helped the San Francisco Unicorns dominate the Texas Super Kings.

The San Francisco Unicorns finally found their rhythm in this season’s Major League Cricket, dismantling the Texas Super Kings with a performance that leaned heavily on veteran nous and youthful composure. Chasing a modest target of 153, the Unicorns cruised home with 13 balls to spare, securing a seven-wicket win that marks their first points of the campaign.

The bowling blueprint

The tone was set early by the evergreen Peter Siddle. After the Unicorns won the toss and sent the Super Kings in, Siddle’s opening spell dismantled the top order, eventually finishing with a decisive 3/36. He was expertly supported by Ghulam Mudassar and Brody Couch, who ensured the Texas batting unit never found its footing. By the end of the powerplay, the Super Kings were reeling at 43/3, a position from which they struggled to recover despite a late-order surge from Hardus Viljoen, who provided some stability with an unbeaten 33.

The match also served as the much-anticipated, albeit difficult, debut for R. Ashwin. Making his first competitive appearance since July 2025, the Indian veteran found the conditions challenging. He was introduced in the fourth over and immediately targeted by Milind Kumar, who struck him for two sixes. Ashwin finished his two-over stint conceding 24 runs without a wicket, a stark contrast to his counterpart and Unicorns captain Matthew Short, who claimed 2/25 in a measured four-over spell.

A chase defined by partnership

The Unicorns' reply was built on the back of an 82-run partnership between Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Short. While Nandre Burger struck early to remove Finn Allen, the middle phase of the chase was clinical. Pretorius, who anchored the innings with an unbeaten 69 off 55 balls, and Short, who chipped in with a vital 31, effectively took the game away from the Texas bowlers during the middle overs. Even as the scoring rate slowed slightly toward the end, the result was never in doubt.

Why it matters

This victory is more than just a notch in the win column; it highlights the tactical depth the Unicorns possess. For a team needing to arrest an early-season slide, the ability to restrict an opponent to 152 on a surface that offered assistance to the pacers suggests a well-drilled unit. The "SFU vs TSK" matchup demonstrated that while high-profile names like Ashwin will always draw eyes, it is the consistency of the entire bowling collective—like Siddle’s precision—that ultimately wins tight T20 games. For the Super Kings, the challenge remains in rebuilding their top-order reliability before their next fixture.
