Shadows over the sanctum: How a missing donation trail hit the Ayodhya temple trust

A Special Investigation Team probe into alleged embezzlement of temple offerings has led to eight arrests, triggering a sharp decline in public contributions.

The heavy, ornate donation boxes at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, once overflowing with the faith of millions, now carry the weight of a deepening scandal. What began as a routine exercise in transparency has spiralled into a criminal investigation, with authorities confirming that eight individuals—including those directly responsible for the counting of cash and valuables—have been booked. The charges follow a complaint filed by the temple trust, alleging systematic embezzlement of the offerings meant for the grand shrine.

The scale of the lapses flagged by investigators is staggering. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already questioned over 100 people, scrutinising the two-shift counting process that involves 35 donation boxes. Sources familiar with the probe point to glaring irregularities: inconsistent CCTV checks, gaps in the digital tracking of cash, and the mysterious disappearance of gold and silver ‘Ram shilas’. While the initial probe wraps up, the fallout has been immediate and severe; reports indicate that daily collections have plummeted by over 90 percent, shrinking from a robust ₹12 lakh to a mere ₹1 lakh.

The unfolding probe

The temple trust, led by senior functionaries like Champat Rai, finds itself in a tight spot as public scrutiny intensifies. While the SIT prepares to file its preliminary report, political pressure is mounting from opposition leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, who have questioned why the FIR process faced initial delays. The investigation is not just about missing currency; it is about the sanctity of the donation process itself, which has now been exposed as vulnerable to internal manipulation.

The police have been methodical, tracing the logs of those tasked with the counting process. By booking the very people entrusted with the keys and the count, the probe suggests a breach of trust from within the system rather than an external heist. Whether this points to an organised syndicate operating under the veil of piety remains the central question for the SIT as they move toward the next phase of their inquiry.

Why it matters

For the BJP-led establishment, the Ayodhya temple is not just a religious site but a cornerstone of their socio-political identity. Any perception of financial impropriety hits at the heart of the movement’s moral authority. With the 2027 UP elections on the horizon, the opposition is watching closely. If the trust fails to restore absolute transparency, the "donation row" could provide a potent narrative tool to challenge the party’s governance record in the state. The issue is no longer just about misplaced gold; it is about the accountability of powerful institutions in the public eye.
