Puri Gears Up for Grand Snana Yatra: A Massive Security Shield for Monday’s Rituals

As the holy triad prepares for their ceremonial bathing on Monday, Puri transforms into a high-security zone to manage the arrival of lakhs of devotees.

The atmosphere in Puri is electric. As the full moon of the Jyestha month rises, the city readies itself for the Snana Yatra, the birthday celebration of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. On Monday, the holy triad will be brought from the sanctum sanctorum of the Puri Jagannath temple to the Snana Vedi in a rhythmic, grand procession known as Pahandi Bije. Between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., the deities will take their place on the bathing platform, where priests will perform the sacred ritual of bathing them with 108 pitchers of aromatic, sandalwood-infused water.

A Massive Security Operation

The scale of the logistics required to host this event is immense. With lakhs of pilgrims expected to descend on the temple town, the district administration has moved well beyond standard crowd management. A six-point security plan is currently in motion, anchored by 80 platoons of police personnel. The deployment is granular and strategic: from rooftop surveillance and Quick Action Teams to specialized marine security units and sniffer dog squads. An Integrated Command and Control Centre is already live, monitoring every movement to ensure that the darshan remains smooth for everyone, including senior citizens and Divyang devotees.

Following the bathing rituals, which are scheduled to conclude by 2 p.m., the deities will undergo the unique 'Gajanana Besha', where they are adorned with elephant masks. This marks the transition toward a period of seclusion; by nightfall, the siblings will move to the Anasara Gruha, remaining in isolation for 15 days before they emerge for the much-awaited Ratha Yatra.
