Public Outrage Spills Over: Kolkata Councillor Dasgupta Faces Egg Attack Following Arrest

Residents gather outside Patuli police station as a TMC councillor faces extortion and intimidation charges, marking a volatile shift in local political accountability.

The streets of southeast Kolkata turned volatile on Sunday as hundreds of residents converged outside the Patuli police station to vent their anger against Bappaditya Dasgupta, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor currently under police custody. The situation escalated into a public spectacle when demonstrators, furious over allegations of systematic extortion and harassment, pelted the vehicle carrying the accused with eggs as it departed for the Alipore court under heavy security.

Dasgupta, who represents Ward 101 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was arrested on Saturday evening alongside an associate, Sourav Ghosh. Senior police officials confirmed that the duo has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The charges are grave, ranging from extortion and criminal intimidation to attempted arson and criminal trespass.

The catalyst for the arrest is a formal complaint lodged by Paramita Dey, a local advocate. Ms. Dey alleged that her attempt to establish a legal chamber at her residence triggered a series of predatory demands from the councillor. According to the complaint, Dasgupta demanded ₹20 lakh, eventually extorting ₹2 lakh after subjecting her to sustained pressure. Her testimony further claims that in the aftermath of the 2021 Assembly elections, the accused and his associates vandalized her property and attempted to set it on fire.

A Pattern of Alleged Intimidation

The allegations against the councillor extend far beyond a single extortion case. Residents gathered outside the station openly accused Dasgupta of orchestrating land-grabbing schemes and using intimidation to silence those who refused to meet his monetary demands. Ms. Dey’s account suggests a harrowing ordeal of social ostracism and continuous threats, which ultimately compelled her to flee her home and relocate to avoid further harassment.

The intensity of the protest reflects a growing, localized pushback against political dominance in the area. As central paramilitary personnel assisted the Kolkata police in moving the accused, the crowd attempted to block the convoy, signaling a breakdown in the perceived immunity enjoyed by local power brokers. Observers on the ground noted that the public outburst serves as a barometer for long-standing grievances regarding the conduct of TMC leadership in the region.

The arrest and the subsequent public fury underscore a broader, shifting narrative regarding local governance. As the legal process against the accused proceeds, the incident has highlighted the vulnerability of citizens against institutionalized extortion. For many in the community, the protest was not merely a reaction to a single arrest, but a collective demand for an end to the climate of fear that has plagued the locality for years.
