Power boost: Telangana government announces DA hike for 70,000+ employees

The state government has cleared a 1.621% increase in Dearness Allowance for power sector personnel, effective from January 1, as energy demand projections hit record highs.

At the Vidyut Soudha in Hyderabad this week, the atmosphere was one of strategic recalibration. Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, flanked by top officials including the Special Chief Secretaries of the Energy and Finance departments, announced a significant da hike for the state’s power sector workforce. The decision, which grants a 1.621% increase in Dearness Allowance, will see the DA rise from 17.651% to 19.272%.

This move, which will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2024, brings a much-needed financial boost to over 70,804 beneficiaries, including regular staff, artisans, and pensioners across entities like TG Transco, TG Genco, and the state-run Discoms. The state exchequer will shoulder an additional monthly burden of approximately ₹9.35 crore to accommodate this welfare measure.

A strategic balancing act

The hike is being framed by the government as both a welfare initiative and a recognition of the grit shown by the power sector employees. Despite the state witnessing record-breaking electricity demand recently, the workforce has managed to maintain supply stability across the grid. Officials noted that sustaining morale is critical as the sector prepares for a future where energy needs are expected to surge significantly.

The 2035 energy roadmap

Beyond the immediate financial announcement, the review meeting served as a warning bell for the state’s infrastructure capabilities. Current peak demand has already touched 18,548 MW. According to government projections, this figure is expected to nearly double to 34,137 MW by the year 2035-36.

To meet this, the Deputy CM has directed department heads to move past short-term fixes. The focus is now on crafting a long-term, ten-year strategic plan for infrastructure development. Meanwhile, with the monsoon season currently active, field staff have been placed on high alert to ensure that any weather-related outages are addressed with immediate effect to prevent public inconvenience.

Why it matters

This decision reflects the delicate balancing act facing the Telangana administration: managing rising operational costs while keeping the state’s essential services workforce incentivized. By coupling a salary-related benefit with a hard push for infrastructure modernization, the government is signaling that it views the stability of the power sector as the backbone of its industrial and domestic growth. For the average ఉద్యోగి (employee), this is a reprieve against inflationary pressures, but for the state, the real test lies in whether current grid investments can truly keep pace with the projected 34,000 MW surge over the next decade.
