Picnic turns tragic: Two MBBS students drown in Gwalior’s Tigra Dam

A weekend outing ended in a search operation spanning 18 hours after two medical students lost their lives in the restricted waters of a Madhya Pradesh reservoir.

The serene banks of Gwalior’s Tigra Dam became the site of a grim recovery operation this weekend after two second-year MBBS students from the Gajara Raja Medical College (GRMC) drowned during a picnic. What began as an outing for a group of eight friends quickly spiraled into a nightmare when two members of the group—Ayush Srivastava from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and Gopal Agarwal from Sagar, Bina—ventured into the water and failed to surface.

The search and recovery

The group had wandered into the Kachchi Paar area, a restricted zone located roughly three kilometers away from the designated boat club. When the two students did not return, their peers grew anxious. A search of the immediate rocky banks revealed only the personal belongings of the pair—their clothes and shoes left behind.

The MP Police were alerted once it became clear the two had likely entered the water. A massive 18-hour rescue operation was launched, involving the State Disaster and Emergency Response Force (SDERF) and local police, who worked through the night using high-power searchlights and boats. Agarwal’s body was recovered during the early hours of Sunday, while the team located Srivastava’s body at approximately 3 p.m. later that day.

Why it matters: The safety crisis at popular sites

This tragedy highlights a recurring pattern of safety negligence at unregulated tourist spots near major cities. While Tigra Dam is a known destination for students and locals looking for a reprieve from academic pressure, the "restricted" status of areas like Kachchi Paar remains poorly enforced. The incident raises urgent questions about the lack of fencing, warning signage, and patrolling at water bodies across Madhya Pradesh.

For institutions like GRMC, this incident marks a devastating blow to the student community. As families arrive in Gwalior to claim the remains of their children, the local administration is left to grapple with the aftermath. The police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances, but the event serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a casual weekend break can turn into a state-wide tragedy.
