Murshidabad MLA Humayun Kabir Faces Twin FIRs Over Alleged Inflammatory Remarks
Humayun Kabir: বিজেপিকে হুমকি, হুমায়ুন কবিরের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা রুজু পুলিশের
The AIJUP leader finds himself in legal crosshairs after a viral video of his speech in Rejinagar sparks a massive backlash from the saffron camp.
The political temperature in Murshidabad has surged following a controversial speech delivered by 'Am Janata Adhikar Party' (AIJUP) chief and MLA Humayun Kabir. In a video that has since gone viral, Kabir is heard issuing a stern warning to BJP leaders, specifically targeting Anamika Ghosh—whom he defeated in the assembly polls—and state Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. The fallout was swift: legal action has been initiated against the legislator in two separate districts.
According to reports, including those from our preferred source, Asianetnews Bangla, the primary legal challenges originated from BJP workers. Kajal Goswami, a local BJP activist in Malda, filed a formal complaint at the English Bazar police station, while members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) registered an FIR at the Berhampore police station. These complaints center on allegations that Kabir’s speech incited violence and threatened the safety of political opponents.
In the contentious footage, Kabir is seen accusing BJP cadres of acting with "undue arrogance" despite their electoral defeat in the region. Addressing Suvendu Adhikari directly, the MLA stated, "The day I mobilize my community and step onto the field, I will strike back with such force that there won't be anyone left to carry your party flag." The MLA’s rhetoric, which linked community mobilization with a direct threat to the BJP's presence in Murshidabad, has provided the impetus for this legal escalation.
When questioned about the FIRs, Kabir remained defiant. Rather than backing down, the AIJUP leader questioned the double standards of his opponents, asking if he was expected to remain silent in the face of what he perceives as constant provocations and derogatory remarks from the BJP leadership.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Matters
This incident is symptomatic of the increasingly volatile political discourse in West Bengal, where local leaders are frequently testing the limits of permissible speech. For the administration, the challenge lies in balancing the right to political criticism with the legal thresholds of hate speech and incitement. The filing of twin FIRs serves as a strategic move by the BJP to keep pressure on an outspoken opponent, signaling that the party intends to utilize legal avenues to counter aggressive political posturing on the ground. As the legal process unfolds, the case will likely serve as a litmus test for how law enforcement handles inflammatory rhetoric during periods of high political friction.
