Monsoon Fury: Telangana on High Alert as Heavy Rains Disrupt Normalcy

The southwest monsoon has officially intensified its grip on Telangana, catching the state in a sudden spell of heavy downpours that disrupted daily life and aviation services over the weekend. Following a surge in rainfall activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Mulugu, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Mahabubabad, warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

The weather shift follows the monsoon’s steady progression across the region. As of Saturday, the system had advanced through Hyderabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem, stretching toward Solapur and Kalingapatnam. Meteorologists expect these conditions to persist, with the monsoon likely to cover more ground across Telangana and neighboring states over the next 48 hours.

A Weekend of Record Rainfall

The intensity of the current spell was felt acutely on Saturday, with Sangareddy recording a staggering 11.5 cm of rainfall in Kondapur. Other parts of the state were not spared; Vanaparthi’s Revalli saw 7.3 cm, while Valigonda in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district recorded 6.7 cm. The impact wasn't limited to the districts; even the outskirts of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad faced disruptions, with heavy winds and rain causing significant delays to flight schedules.

In response to the mounting monsoon fury, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy convened an emergency meeting with top officials late Saturday night. The government has directed the police, revenue department, and the Disaster Response Force (HYDRA) to remain on high alert. Teams have been tasked with monitoring water bodies and drains, and importantly, shifting residents from low-lying, vulnerable areas to safer locations to prevent any loss of life or property.
