Monsoon Fury: Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal Triggers Alert Across Northern Kerala

As a intensifying weather system brews off the coast, heavy rains and landslips have begun to disrupt daily life, prompting urgent warnings for residents across six districts.

The monsoon’s intensity has shifted gears this week as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has evolved into a deep depression. For those tracking the nattuvartha updates, the immediate impact is a yellow alert issued across Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. The Met department’s forecast suggests that the worst is yet to come, with an orange alert already marked for Kannur and Kasaragod for tomorrow.

The physical toll of this weather surge is already visible. In the Nadukani Ghat section, a truck driver had a narrow escape when a massive tree, weakened by the relentless rain, collapsed onto his vehicle. While he survived with minor injuries and is currently recovering at a private hospital in Vandoor, the incident highlights the precarious nature of travel through Kerala’s hilly tracts during such spells.

Infrastructure Under Pressure

The instability is not confined to the roads. In Pala, the fragility of older infrastructure was laid bare when a 70-year-old well at the home of Mary Thomas in Bharananganam caved in. The sudden collapse, which dragged the structure’s protective walls and boundary fence into the earth, serves as a stark reminder of how saturated soil can compromise even long-standing foundations.

For many in these regions, the conversation has turned to the uncertainty of their daily routines. While the state government often evaluates whether an avadhi (holiday) is necessary for educational institutions during extreme weather events, residents are currently bracing for a sustained period of disruption. Current programs from the IMD indicate that heavy rainfall will persist across central and northern Kerala at least until July 9th.

The Bigger Picture

Why does this matter? Beyond the immediate headlines, we are seeing a recurring pattern in the state’s monsoon behavior. The transition of a simple low-pressure system into a deep depression over a short window suggests an increasingly volatile atmospheric environment. This isn't just about localized flooding; it’s about the cumulative stress on a landscape that is already highly sensitive to heavy downpours.

As the sea remains turbulent along the Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka coasts, the fishing community has been advised to exercise extreme caution. For the rest of us, the coming days demand a heightened sense of vigilance. Whether it’s monitoring the integrity of old structures or avoiding unnecessary travel through high-risk zones, the weather is once again dictating the tempo of life in the state.
