India’s auto news live updates confirm that the iconic hatchback is now ready to run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel, marking a significant step for the commercial transport sector.

The familiar silhouette of the मारुति सुजुकी वैगन आर has just received a major mechanical heart transplant. As of June 15, 2026, the company has officially pulled the covers off its first flex-fuel vehicle in the country, priced at ₹7.24 lakh. While the exterior remains instantly recognizable, the engineering under the hood is a radical departure from the standard petrol-only models that have long dominated Indian driveways.

To handle the corrosive nature of high-ethanol blends, Maruti engineers have overhauled the engine architecture. The car retains the reliable 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine, but it is now bolstered by upgraded fuel injectors, a redesigned fuel pump, and fortified fuel lines. Perhaps most crucially, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has been recalibrated and paired with a specialized ethanol sensor, allowing the vehicle to run seamlessly on E85—a blend comprising 85% ethanol and 15% petrol.

A Targeted Rollout

For now, don't expect to see this model in every suburban garage. The manufacturer is launching the Wagon R Flex Fuel specifically for the commercial sector. By focusing on taxi fleets and commercial operators first, Maruti is effectively creating a real-world testing ground for flex-fuel technology. This strategy allows them to monitor performance in high-usage, high-mileage environments before considering a wider retail launch.

The shift to a 5-speed manual transmission paired with these ethanol-ready internals suggests that the company is prioritizing durability and ease of maintenance. This is a critical move, as the success of ethanol-based mobility hinges on the vehicle’s ability to withstand varying fuel qualities and high-intensity operation cycles common in the Indian taxi market.

The Bigger Picture

This launch isn't just about a new car; it’s a vital indicator of how the automotive industry is aligning with the national energy roadmap. As India pushes to reduce its massive crude oil import bill, incentivizing the use of biofuels like ethanol is a central policy pillar. By introducing this technology in a high-volume, mass-market platform, the industry is signaling that it is prepared to transition away from pure fossil fuels.

For policymakers and environmentalists, the move is a litmus test. If the commercial segment adopts these vehicles without significant mechanical hitches, it could accelerate the push for widespread E85 infrastructure. For the common commuter, this is the first tangible sign that the fuel transition is moving from academic debate to the local showroom.
