As the opposition INDIA bloc readies for a high-stakes strategy session on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal held private talks to discuss the shifting political landscape.

The national capital turned into a beehive of political activity on Sunday as Mamata Banerjee arrived in Delhi to spearhead her party’s participation in the crucial INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for June 8. In a move that underscored the fluid nature of current opposition alliances, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief, accompanied by National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, met with Arvind Kejriwal at the latter’s residence. While the TMC characterized the encounter as a "warm" interaction, the meeting carries significant weight as the bloc struggles to maintain cohesion following recent electoral setbacks.

A Fractured Coalition

The opposition alliance is entering Monday’s meeting under a cloud of internal friction. Twenty-three parties are expected to congregate to redraw their strategy against the BJP, but the assembly election results—which saw heavyweights like the TMC and DMK face significant challenges—have forced a reassessment of power dynamics. The alliance is currently grappling with public displays of discord; notably, the DMK has signaled its intention to skip the proceedings, citing a "betrayal" by the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. Simultaneously, the CPI(M) has voiced sharp criticism against Congress leadership, accusing them of colluding with the BJP in Kerala.

AAP’s Stance and Future Alignment

Though Mamata Banerjee remains a central pillar of the INDIA bloc, her meeting with Kejriwal highlights the complexities of non-Congress coordination. The Aam Aadmi Party has maintained a distance from the broader alliance for several months, with senior AAP figures explicitly ruling out a return to the fold. AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar recently slammed the Congress, labeling their alliance-building tactics as self-serving rather than nation-focused. Given this firm stance, the party is widely expected to be absent from the formal INDIA meeting on Monday.

Searching for 2029

Despite the visible fractures, the TMC’s messaging remains focused on the long-term horizon. Following the Sunday session, the party issued a statement on X emphasizing the need for unity to secure a "better future" in 2029, signaling a clear intent to look beyond immediate electoral disappointments toward the next Lok Sabha cycle. For Mamata Banerjee, the challenge lies in balancing her role as an anchor of the opposition against the growing regional discontent that threatens to unravel the coalition before it can regain its footing.

As the June 8 meeting approaches, the focus remains on whether the alliance can iron out these deep-seated grievances or if the "road ahead" will continue to be marked by internal departures. While there was no official word on whether the specific details of Monday’s agenda were finalized between the two leaders, the direct engagement between the TMC and AAP underscores a recurring pattern of bilateral communication that often runs parallel to the formal, and increasingly strained, INDIA bloc consultations.
