Legal trouble for Tollywood stars: Vijay Deverakonda and Venkatesh face Telangana Cricket Association notice

The Telangana Cricket Association has issued legal notices to actors and cricketers over their alleged involvement in the unsanctioned TG20 league.

The glamour of South Indian cinema and the high stakes of professional cricket have collided in an unexpected courtroom drama. This week, the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) sent legal notices to some of the biggest names in the industry, including actors Vijay Deverakonda and Venkatesh, along with prominent cricketers such as Tilak Varma, Ambati Rayudu, and Mohammed Siraj. The core of the dispute? Their alleged association with the upcoming TG20 league.

The crux of the legal standoff

At the heart of the TCA’s grievance is the regulatory legitimacy of the TG20 tournament. The association alleges that the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has been engaging with corporate entities to promote this league without the mandatory clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In the ecosystem of Indian cricket, any tournament operating outside the BCCI’s umbrella is effectively unauthorized. By allegedly lending their names or promotional support to this project, the stars and athletes find themselves caught in a regulatory crossfire.

For the celebrities involved, this is a distraction they could hardly afford. Vijay Deverakonda is currently neck-deep in the production of the historical action drama Ranabali, directed by Rahul Sankrityan, alongside his commitments to Rowdy Janardhan. Similarly, veteran actor Venkatesh is busy with the shoot of Aadarsh Kutumbam. As of now, neither the actors nor the mentioned cricketers have issued a public response to the notices or the underlying allegations.

Why it matters

The incident highlights a growing friction point in Indian sports management: the commercialization of regional leagues and the blurred lines between celebrity endorsements and official sporting protocols. When stars promote a tournament, they provide it with instant credibility; however, when that tournament lacks the formal sanction of the national governing body, that same credibility becomes a liability. The TCA’s move serves as a stern warning to both corporate sponsors and public figures that the BCCI’s mandate remains the final word on cricket in India.

Industry observers suggest that this might just be the tip of the iceberg. As regional T20 leagues continue to proliferate across the country to capitalize on the massive cricket-viewing audience, the battle between official state associations and private organizers is expected to intensify. For now, the legal fallout will likely hinge on whether the participants can demonstrate that their involvement was purely commercial or if they inadvertently bypassed the essential regulatory checkpoints.
