The Indian racer led from start to finish in a masterclass performance in Spain, securing his first win of the season and climbing the championship ladder.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya witnessed a commanding display of precision as Kush Maini claimed his first victory of the 2026 season. Starting from second on the grid, the Indian racer executed a perfect launch, instantly snatching the lead from pole-sitter Noel Leon. From that moment, Maini remained unflappable, managing his tyres through the heat of the race to cross the finish line with a dominant 7.269-second gap over the rest of the field.

This victory is a significant milestone for the ART Grand Prix driver, marking his third overall win in Formula 2. While chaotic battles raged behind him—culminating in a tense fight between championship leader Gabriele Mini and rival Nikola Tsolov—Maini maintained a steady pace, controlling the race from the front to ensure there was no way back for his challengers.

A climb up the standings

With this Barcelona GP Sprint Race win, Maini has successfully vaulted from tenth to eighth in the overall F2 championship standings. It serves as a timely boost for the driver, who is currently in his fourth season in the series. Beyond his F2 commitments, Maini continues to balance high-stakes responsibilities, serving as the Alpine F1 team’s reserve and test driver, while also acting as a reserve for Mahindra Racing in Formula E.

Why it matters

The victory is more than just a trophy; it is a validation of Maini’s transition to the ART Grand Prix outfit. After a season of building momentum, this win proves he has the consistency to contend at the front of the pack. For Indian motorsport, it highlights the growing depth of talent outside the premier F1 race category. Maini’s ability to handle the pressure of leading every lap on a technical track like Barcelona suggests he is reaching a level of maturity that could be critical as the F2 season hits its halfway point.

The pressure does not end here, however. Maini now turns his focus to the Feature Race on June 14, where he will start from the ninth position. While the Sprint race format rewards a quick start and tyre management, the Feature Race will require a different tactical approach to maintain his newfound momentum in the standings. With the field as tight as it is, maintaining this upward trajectory in the coming rounds will be the true test of his title credentials.
