Former India cricketer Atul Wassan welcomes the strategic rotation of Virat Kohli, citing the depth of talent as a major boost for the national side.

The upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled to commence on June 13 in Dharamshala, will see a significant shift in India’s batting lineup. Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the entire series after sustaining a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final on May 31. While the veteran batter demonstrated remarkable resilience by scoring an unbeaten 75 to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure back-to-back titles, medical assessments later confirmed that the discomfort he felt on the field was more than just fatigue.

A calculated break for the veteran

Former India cricketer Atul Wassan has publicly endorsed the decision to rest the star player, viewing the development as a pragmatic move rather than a setback. Speaking on the necessity of workload management, Wassan noted that forcing the veteran through every bilateral series leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup would be counterproductive.

"I’m actually happy with this news," Wassan remarked. "Looking at the intensity on his body during the IPL, and him playing in this heat at his age, I think it would have been pragmatic for him to take a backseat anyway." By drawing a parallel to the careful handling of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Wassan emphasized that top-tier athletes must be protected like "cotton wool" to ensure they are at their peak for major ICC events.

The rise of Yashasvi Jaiswal

With Kohli out of the mix, the national selectors have drafted Yashasvi Jaiswal into the squad. The young opener, who impressed in his last ODI outing against South Africa with a century, represents the immense bench strength currently available to the Indian team. The shift from Kohli to Jaiswal has been described by Wassan as an "embarrassment of riches," highlighting that even high-caliber talents are currently finding it difficult to secure a permanent spot in the starting XI.

The series, which will also visit Lucknow and Chennai, serves as an ideal testing ground for India’s emerging stars. While the absence of a player of Kohli's stature is usually a cause for concern, the current internal competition suggests that the team management is prioritizing long-term squad fitness over immediate individual milestones. This rotation policy appears to be a calculated gamble designed to keep the core group fresh while simultaneously exposing younger talent to high-pressure international cricket.
