With the southwest monsoon gaining momentum, authorities have warned of heavy rainfall and gusty winds, forcing a state-wide state of high alert.

The morning air in Alappuzha and Ernakulam turned heavy on Wednesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded an orange alert for the two districts. The warning, which was active for a three-hour window starting at 10 am, underscores the volatility of the ongoing monsoon season in Kerala, where heavy downpours and strong winds have become the defining feature of the week.

The IMD’s latest forecast paints a challenging picture, predicting thunderstorms and moderate rain across a wide swathe of the state. Beyond the two districts under the orange alert—which signals a risk of very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm—officials have extended warnings to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. In these areas, surface winds are expected to whip up at speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph.

A Pattern of Disruption

This weather event follows a turbulent Tuesday, where northern Kerala bore the brunt of the atmospheric instability. The combination of intense precipitation and gale-force winds led to widespread waterlogging, turning streets into streams and forcing local administrations to scramble for precautionary evacuations. For residents in low-lying or vulnerable areas, the state’s directive is clear: maintain high vigilance as the weather window remains narrow and unpredictable.

The frequency of these alerts over the past 48 hours highlights a system that is showing little sign of weakening. With the southwest monsoon now firmly entrenched and advancing, the IMD’s grid of warnings—ranging from yellow to orange—is being updated in real-time to keep pace with the shifting clouds.

Why it Matters: The Bigger Picture

The recurring nature of these alerts is a reminder of the mounting pressure on Kerala’s disaster management infrastructure. While the monsoon is a lifeblood for the state’s agricultural and water security, the intensity of these short-burst, high-volume weather events is increasingly testing the resilience of urban drainage and rural terrain.

For the administration, the challenge lies in balancing the routine warnings of the monsoon season with the acute need to prevent loss of life during sudden, extreme weather spikes. As the state remains under a broader yellow alert, the coming 24 to 48 hours will be critical. Citizens are advised to monitor official channels closely, as the transition from a standard monsoon day to an emergency-level alert is happening with alarming speed.
