High-Stakes Rajya Sabha Race in Jharkhand as Nathwani Returns to the Fray
Jharkhand numbers game in Rajya Sabha race heats up as BJP bets on Parimal Nathwani

The entry of veteran corporate executive Parimal Nathwani as an NDA-backed candidate has turned the June 18 Jharkhand Rajya Sabha election into a battle of arithmetic and cross-party influence.
The corridors of the Jharkhand Assembly are buzzing once again as the state gears up for a high-stakes contest for two Rajya Sabha seats. The entry of Gujarat-based businessman Parimal Nathwani, who has secured the backing of the BJP-led NDA, has injected a fresh layer of unpredictability into what initially appeared to be a straightforward election. With the ruling JMM-led alliance holding a comfortable majority, the focus is now squarely on whether Nathwani can bridge his deficit in first-preference votes to clinch a seat.
The Arithmetic of the Contest
To secure a win, a candidate requires 28 first-preference votes in the 81-member Assembly. The JMM is firmly positioned to take one seat, given its strength of 34 MLAs. However, the second seat is far less certain. The NDA, comprising the BJP (21), LJP-RV (1), JD-U (1), and AJSU Party (1), currently commands 24 votes. This leaves the bloc four short of the magic number required to send Nathwani to the Upper House.
While the JMM-led alliance holds a total of 56 MLAs—enough to theoretically secure both seats if their ranks hold firm—the entry of an Independent candidate often triggers speculation about cross-voting. Political watchers are keeping a close eye on the lone legislator from the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), Jairam Mahto, whose support could be a decisive factor for the NDA camp.
Nathwani’s Known Playbook
For Nathwani, a senior corporate executive who previously represented Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms between 2008 and 2020, this is familiar territory. After filing his nomination on Monday, he sought to project an image of bipartisan appeal, stating, “I share good relations with leaders across political parties. I request all parties to support me.” He brushed aside concerns regarding horse-trading, pointing to his 2014 campaign as an Independent, where he successfully drew support from the BJP and AJSU without controversy.
His candidacy is particularly interesting given his recent meeting with Chief Minister Hemant Soren before pivoting to the NDA fold. Whether this maneuver was a strategic miscalculation or a carefully planned opening remains to be seen as the lobbying intensifies.
Why It Matters
This contest is a litmus test for floor management in a state where political loyalties have historically been fluid. For the BJP, backing a veteran like Nathwani signals a desire to exert influence in a state where they currently sit in the Opposition. For the ruling alliance, the challenge lies in preventing internal leaks; any erosion in their vote share would not just cost them a seat, but also undermine the perceived stability of the coalition. As both sides scramble to shore up their numbers, the June 18 election serves as a reminder that in the Upper House, the race is often won in the quiet corners of backroom negotiations long before the first ballot is cast.
