George Kurian Resigns: Rajya Sabha Term Ends, Union Minister Steps Down

The Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries has formally stepped down from his role following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha tenure, marking a shift in the BJP’s organizational strategy.

The Union Council of Ministers saw a transition this week as George Kurian officially tendered his resignation. Following the advice of the Prime Minister, President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution, effective immediately. The move comes as the veteran BJP leader's six-year term in the Rajya Sabha drew to a close, necessitating his exit from the cabinet in accordance with constitutional requirements that mandate ministers be members of Parliament.

A Career Rooted in Strategy

A senior BJP leader since the party's formative years in 1980, Kurian has long been a key figure in the party’s outreach efforts in South India. A Supreme Court lawyer by profession, his tenure as a Minister of State (MoS) for Minority Affairs and Fisheries began in June 2024. Throughout his career, he has navigated various roles, including serving as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities and as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to former Railway Minister O. Rajagopal.

His departure from the union cabinet is not unexpected in political circles. Reports indicate that the party leadership opted not to re-nominate him for the Rajya Sabha, potentially signaling a reshuffling of responsibilities. His recent performance in the Kerala assembly elections, where he contested from Kanjirappally, has been cited in some quarters as a factor in the leadership’s decision to move in a different direction for its legislative representation.

Why It Matters: The Bigger Picture

The resignation of Kurian underscores the ruthless efficiency of the BJP’s internal personnel management. By not extending his Rajya Sabha term, the party has effectively signaled a pivot in its Kerala strategy. Kurian’s exit removes one of the few Christian faces from the cabinet, a move that will likely prompt speculation about how the party intends to sustain its outreach among minority communities in the southern states.

While the resign process was purely procedural—triggered by the expiration of his parliamentary membership—it leaves a vacuum in the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry. The focus now shifts to whether the party will task Kurian with deeper organizational responsibilities in Kerala or if this marks a gradual distancing from current regional faces. As the political landscape in the south remains a primary focus for the national leadership, the replacement for his portfolio will be the next significant indicator of the party's shifting priorities.

Note: Readers are advised not to confuse this development with unrelated reports involving other political figures of a similar name, as misinformation regarding ministerial resignations occasionally surfaces in state-level political discourse.
