From Thrillers to Chaos: The Latest Malayalam OTT Slate for June

As the June streaming calendar heats up, high-stakes dramas and regional comedies dominate digital screens across India.

The digital landscape for Malayalam cinema this June is a study in contrast, moving from the nerve-wracking tension of a blockbuster franchise to the breezy, chaotic energy of college-campus comedies. For viewers tracking the latest Malayalam OTT releases, the week of June 18 offers a diverse mix of genres arriving on major platforms.

The biggest draw is undoubtedly Drishyam 3, which makes its digital debut on Amazon Prime Video on June 18. Mohanlal returns to one of his most iconic roles in this latest chapter of the thriller franchise. Following a successful run in theaters, the film is now rolling out for home audiences in its original Malayalam, alongside dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. As is standard for this series, the plot remains under heavy wraps, relying on the grip of the storytelling that turned the previous installments into national phenomena.

A Genre-Bending Week

Beyond the high-profile return of a franchise, the midweek schedule sees a flurry of activity. On June 19, ManoramaMAX will drop the horror drama Gu. Directed by Manu Radhakrishnan, the film blends the innocence of childhood with the weight of local folklore. Starring Saiju Kurup and Deva Nandha, the plot follows two cousins who begin to investigate the legend of Gulikan, a revered divine figure, after a family member falls prey to inexplicable events. Interestingly, the project also features a voice cameo by Mohanlal, adding a layer of intrigue to this supernatural tale.

Comedy also takes center stage on June 19. SunNXT brings Aashaan to its platform, a film that peels back the curtain on the film industry. Directed by Johnpaul George, it tells the story of an aspiring VFX artist and an elderly cinephile whose lives are upended when a superstar’s massive film crew sets up camp in their Kochi residential complex. Meanwhile, SonyLIV is set to host the premiere of the action-comedy Athiradi on the same day. The film features a star-studded cast, including Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph, centered on a rivalry between an engineering student and an aspiring singer that spirals into a series of chaotic, comedic events.

Why it matters

The current release strategy highlights a shift in how regional content is being consumed. By pairing a massive, pan-Indian franchise like Drishyam with niche, experimental projects like Gu or industry-satire like Aashaan, platforms are clearly aiming to cater to both the "event-viewing" crowd and the cinephile audience. This isn't just about entertainment; it reflects the growing economic confidence of regional studios in their ability to command digital space across languages, effectively turning local releases into nationwide discussions. As platforms like SonyLIV and others refine their content mix, the barrier between "regional" and "mainstream" continues to blur significantly.
